Default '83 Speedometer Battle

My speedometer needs work: i've got the odometer gear here, and just need to get into the speedometer. But I'm having a heck of a time...

No matter what I try, I can't pry the ring open to get at the speedometer's innards. And, a few minutes ago, I gave myself a nasty gash on the index finger trying.

I'll bring some photos into play, but I don't even have a gap to work with, so I'm wondering what to do next? I've looked at the SEARCH results, and think I've been doing it right.

Thanks,

Nick

Here are some photos. Should I be trying to pry between the metal shell (hidden during install) and the ring?

Thanks,

Nick
