Default 944 Cam Tower

How difficult is it to change the cam tower on a 89 944 with a 2.7. Im pretty handy mechanics wise just never did a tower on a Porsche. Thanks

Removing it is not hard. An additional person to help would speed things along, but it is not necessary. Basically, you are doing the procedure to change a timing belt plus removing about 10 allen head bolts.

If you are going so far, I would recommend changing the front and rear cam seals since you have the cam tower off the car.

Hey;

Actually, there is a fair bit of extra work from T-belts to this job. None of it partucluarly daunting, but you'll want to do a lot of extra stuff while you have it apart.

- If you can't do timing belts, stop now.
- Off comes the fuel rail, so you might want to do new injector seals
- New front and rear cam seals would be a good idea. You might have some trouble with the front cam gear bolt. They are a fairly large triple square (12pt internal). Most of them seem to strip. Drill the head off and replace with an Allen head bolt.
- You will need a fairly long reach allen to get the internal tower bolts. Make sure you don't drop them inside!
- When you go to put the tower back on, clean off the lifters and grease the lifter galleys. The grease will provide enough friction to keep the lifters in the tower when you turn it bottom down to install it.

Take your time and check everything thrice!

Oops, forgot about the fuel rail. Good call.
