Arrow How much for all the parts for a belts/waterpump job?

My wrench is currently working on the job and he told me that he had to change the bearings??

he told me that with taxes the total for the parts only is close to 875$ USD or 1200$ CAD.

is that right?

He's doing the cam housing reseal as well.

How many hours you think this is gonna be in total?

Last time I did my belts it cost me around 800$ USD or 1100$ CAD (parts and labor).

Let me know what you think...

I have a long list of factory parts that will be needed for an upcoming 944 repair project.

Cost of parts at my local dealership: $995.19.

Cost of parts at Sunset: $368.75.

A $600 difference - for the same parts!

Moral of the story: shop around for parts.

damn.... I should of told him to wait... I know what to do next time...=(

I know he has good prices but I just did a parts search on paragon and it came out to about 600$ USD.

Ho well thanks for your input. I guess next time I'll find the time to do it myself... =)

Just a note about shops and the price you pay for parts there...

First, the shop chooses the parts that they are comfortable with guaranteeing... if a part fails within the warrantee period that they installed, they then have to replace it... this adds cost or overhead to the price they can realistically afford to sell parts for. Second, they are not in the business of buying and selling parts on a mass scale, such as those in the mail-order business are - therefore, they do not get the discounts that larger suppliers would... this means their relative markup is nearly the same as any business (this does vary wildly, so YMMV).

So, you are not only paying for the parts, but also for the shop standing behind the parts. Most shop owners work on smaller margins than they'd like to, if only to compete with those mail-order companies and those who would be willing to work on their own cars.

If you priced all of the parts, and the difference was as stated (~30% markup), then I would consider that fair... not great, but fair.

And having said that.

I just got the parts from Skip to do it myself and it was approx half that.

But of course he's not warryntying the work <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

How about it skip. Got a power steering adjuster and pivot bolt to replace the ones that just snapped on me. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> (jk) I could just kick myself, specially since Chris B warned me of just that same thing when I was doing the job.

Oh well live and learn.
