A 2" piece of PVC pipe works well for the top (pin side) if you don't have a socket. Just cut it a bit longer than the pin.
Vice is good but C clamp works if you don't have one on the bench.
Make sure the retaining rings are seated completely. After you let off the pressure from the vice / c clamp / body weight / etc.. , TAP around the the ring with a screwdriver and light hammer. Just tap.. don't bang.

For future searchers, I bought this Ball Joint Press from Harbor Freight Tools. Worked like it was made to do 944 ball joints!! Child's-play. Also worked great on popping out ball joints from an Explorer control arms.
