Arrow M030 springs on M474 S2 struts ?

Hi all,

1) What is the diameter of M030 springs (1 yellow dot + 1 white dot / 1 yellow dot + 2 white dots) ?

2) Are M030 springs' diameter as high as non-M030 951 springs' diameter or as low as non-M030 S2 springs' diameter ?

3) Are 968 springs the same diameter as S2 springs ?

Thanks in advance for your knowledge !

I don't know the diameter of the M030 springs, but the S2 M474 struts require a smaller-diameter spring than the plain 944 or turbo. I swapped M474 S2 struts into my plain 944 and was a little surprised when I dropped the original spring onto the M474 strut and saw it was a couple cm too large in diameter. I put stock S2 (non-M030) springs onto the struts and they work great in my lighter '88 car.

Thom,
I don't know about M474 but std S2 struts and springs are the same as std 968 struts and springs. M030 springs are larger diameter than the std S2/968 springs and will not fit properly on a non-M030 S2/968. If you have a non M030 S2 then you could either go with the Paragon coil over kit or keep your lower spring perches and install H&R progressive springs also available from Paragon.

Thanks guys !

Adrial - yes please, I would be happy to know both inner and outer diameter if you have time to spend in this.

MadMax - Thanks.
If non-M030 968/944S2 springs share the same diameter, do you know if 968 M030 springs fit on M474 Konis ?
In other words, do M030 968 springs share the same diameter with non-M030 944S2/968 springs ?

Btw, how do 968 M030 springs compare (Length & Stiffness) to 944S2/951 M030 springs, assuming the specs are different (which they seem to be) ?

Thom, the 968 M030 springs will not fit anything other than 968 or 951 M030 adjustable ride height struts. All S2 and 968 non-adjustable ride height springs are the same and swappable - no difference in spring rate, but euro models are a bit shorter (25mm I think).

A quick guide to swappable spring fitments:

group 1 - 83-89 944, 86-88 951, 87-88 944S, 924S
group 2 - 89-91 944S2, 968
group 3 - 88-89 951S, 944S2 w/M030, 968 w/M030

And their aftermarket options:

group 1 - Weltmeister or Eibach 200, 220, 250, 260 sport springs (lowers ~1.25", can be used with spacer to lift 1")
group 2 - H&R lowering springs (lowers ~1.25")
group 3 - 2.5" ID racing spring available in any rate, must also add adapter parts for changed spring diameter.

Good Luck!

Skip - Thanks a lot, exactly what I was looking for ! (except for the units but I'll make do with it).
Btw, do I have to understand 944S2/951 M030 and 968 M030 Koni shock absorbers are the same ?
If so why did Porsche change the ref numbers ?

Adrial - yes please !

4 3/8" OD
3 1/2" ID

Numbers may be off by a bit, I used calipers but there's probably a bit of error in there.

Thom, They are essentially the same, and swappable - I would guess the valving is ever-so-slightly different to match the weight of the car and the chosen spring rate... all Konis of the day were dynamically created for the specific model.

I used the numbers you gave and converted them - that's not from a book, so I hope you were right.

Did you understand what I said... Sprechen Sie Deutsches?!? <img border="0" alt="[oops]" title="" src="graemlins/oops.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[bigbye]" title="" src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" />

Sorry, back on top.

I have carefully looked at the PET and springs that are apparently common do not share the same ref number between the euro market and the US market .
My point is : is Skip's quick guide actually also valid for euro springs/do the numbers indicated in PET actually make any sense ?

Now, knowing that :
- there was no 968 CS for the US market,
- non M030 968 CS (euro-only car, then) featured shorter springs than non M030 968 Lux,
- according to Skip's guide non M030 944 S2 and non M030 968 Lux springs are swappable,

Would non M030 968 CS springs also fit non M030 944 S2 struts (M474 that is) ?

May I add that non M030 968 Lux and non M030 968 CS apparently featured the same shock absorbers, so the answer may be yes ...

PS : I won't order the H&R springs from Paragon I was originally looking for since I got quoted around $100 for shipping.

Thom, I can't accurately answer any question regarding Euro differences in springs outside of what the factory manuals and PET indicate. It appears that all non-M030 S2 and 968 springs are alike and swappable. It appears that all M030 S2 and 968 springs are alike and swappable. It appears that Euro springs are shorter than US springs.

M474 is simple upgrade to Koni Sports without ride-height adjust - e.g. uses the same type spring as non-M030 struts.
