Damn you. I am still trying to get a "early" that REALLY has a blown engine (i've seen it and it's in pieces) - all for the same price of $1000.

LT1, you are going to leave the engine in it, aren't you?

I think the original tools just grabbed me pretty good there.

Be humble, that's all I have to say, <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> but do share your joy with us!

A member in my PCA region got a great deal like that last year. he already had a 944 and a 951 and this guy down the street calls him and says that he has a car that wont start and to come make him an offer. it was a red on black 951 with 52,000 miles. it wont start. he offered him 1500 and got it. that very night they fixed the car by cleaning the starter contacts! doh! It is now a track car.

You've inspired me. I'm now going to search the want ads regularly for basket case 944's and try to find a deal like that.

After futzing with mine most of the fixes aren't too bad. As long as the belt didn't break.

My problem is I usually fix the problems for people. For example:

At car auction. 1984 New Yorker (I just had one so I wanted another) guy outbids me. Gets the key made, but it won't shift into gear. He's distraught. I crawl under the car and put a paper clip in the linkage, tell him to get the proper pin and he drives away. I end up with a basket case Jetta.

Guy selling me a 1984 Ramcharger. Won't start. I tell him to get a set of plugs. Vrooom.

Ex-mother in law looks at a high mielage T-bird. I notice that during the test drive where doing "75 mph" down back roads. When getting out I hit the km/mph switch. Mielage drops a stunning amount. Now the dealer wants thousands more.

I gots to learn to keep my trap shut. That new yorker alone. I could have offered him $300 (he paid $500) and probaly driven away in it.

The main problem with searching for a "basket case" car is that (at least with these cars), a "fatal-looking" problem probably comes up after years of neglect to other things that are expensive to repair or replace.

While my car is not in excellent shape, I do know all of the "to-do" maintenance items, and I try to finish a job without having any "extra parts" lying around. I have also tried to not "jury rig" anything unless absolutely necessary. Sometimes, these surprises are tough to find during a pre-purchase inspection.

So, you may get something that is a simple mechanical or electrical fix, but the interior or paint is in poor shape, etc. So you may get a driveable car, that then takes a lot more $$$ to make it really nice.

I guess it depends on what you are looking for.

Well this might be a start

85 PORSCHE 928. 89K mi, new tires & DieHard batt. Runs fine. Wht w/sunrf. Nds some elec work on right side. Has inspection sticker until July 02. Storage avail for winter mos. Great int. $4500/bo; (Georgetown)

Electrical work for me is nothing. And his problem sounds like it's the power windows or some such. A littel brushing of the contacts and bingo!

Sid,

Some places where people can do some hokey things in modifying a car:

1. Aftermarket fog lamps - relatively simple to remove, but people do all kinds of messed up things to put these in.

2. Aftermarket alarms - I will never let someone paid by the job, not on time needed to do the job, put in an alarm for me. The alarm boxes get jammed in wherever they fit, etc. I have done the alarms in 5+ cars for family members all on my own.

3. Aftermarket radios - Same comment as #2.

I agree 100% Still not much work to straighten that stuff out. In the case of alarms 9 times out of 10 pull the whole frigging thing out.
