Any reason I shouldn't dispose of this OLD but unopened motor oil?
Cleaned out the in-laws' basement yesterday and found four quarts of Havoline Supreme 10W40, plus 2 quarts of Havoline Dextron II auto trans fluid. The stuff must be at least 20 years old (it's in quart cans!)
They're going to the dump unless someone thinks there's a reason to use them. From what I've read, the dino stock 10W40 is junk due to the modifiers used to create that range.

Ha Ha ! So true! I'm not sure 20 y/o product will get you much $$, but it all depends on how rare and desireable the item is. Generally, the more colorful ones have a higher value. I have Texaco stuff so old, that it's pre bar-code.

Dump it into a diesel's fuel tank. It's free fuel. Yes, it will even eat the ATF.
I have run a diesel motor on straight motor oil and it does work.

I might be able to get $10-15 on ebay for the oil, but it's probably not worth the hassle.

the hassle of making some collector happy?? What if a ****-ring used by Abe Lincoln is what you had been searching for for years was just sitting around in a box somewhere?? OK bad analogy, but still!

Sorry for hijacking, but Arash, have you given any thought to converting your 300TD to waste veggie oil? My brother is doing it to his 240D this summer, and i am to my Audi 5000TD/

My diesel is from 1982 before ULSD and before emissions systems were implemented on diesels (well it has an EGR valve but not a smart one so I bypassed it). Any diesel can combust oil, but on your new fancy GL320 it will probably make the onboard mainframe unhappy. +1 sell the cans as collector's items. Beware that shipping oil might be a problem with some companies.
