I've use Mobil1 75W90 and Lucas 75W90 Synthetic. Both work fine (shifts are light and clean). I do wish I had gone with MT-90 just to see if it would quiet that "rattle-gurgle" sound at low RPM.

well, I'm not sure my 944 will see winter time this year, except maybe to start it and get fluids going, and shut it back down

and it's DEFINETLY going into the garage

so I was wondering since I'm not driving it much at all, if it would be OK not to change oil at all? or should I change it to 10w-30 just for winter, and once it warms up, go back to 20w-50?

I have used both Royal Purple and Amzoil. Both work great --- I am currently using Royal Purple. You can get it at NAPA. Amzoil is a distributor item.

Just my findings.

I'm no expert, so this is just an opinion...

Since it will be garaged and you are only starting it occassionally, you should be fine with the 20w50... just don't try starting it when the temps are around 30 or below. It'll crank slowly and take a while for the oil to start flowing freely. Of course, you could always buy one of those crankcase oil heater things or a block heater and plug it in on really cold days

I would never run 10w30; most of what I read indicates the hot rating of 30 is too low to maintain good oil pressure once it warms up. YMMV, but I'd go 40/50 for the hot rating (number after teh "w")

Im bumping to throw this out there:

From the Subaru world (the land of poor five speeds), our miracle cure is as follows:

2 Quarts Castrol HyPoy-C
1 Pennzoil Syncromesh
1 RedLine Lightweight ShockProof

It makes a choppy five speed run like a dream. Would this (with similar ratios to fill the box) be a good idea for an early 944?

the early 944 only holds about 2.7 quarts. Castrol Hypoy-C would be fine, what I would put in an early 944 is 1 quart lightweight shockproof and the rest MT-90. I have used this combo with excellent results.

Only 2.7? Wow, I didn't realize a trans-axle holds that much less then a AWD 5-Speed.

I think I'm going to go with the MT-90 & Shockproof Combo @ 1.7:1 Ratio. Any objections, anyone?

I'm just hopping around trying to find things to do on sunday to get this car ready for use. I figured this is something I'd be able to add on the list. Thanks for the Help, CS!

same here.

replaced mine a month ago with Mobil1. I'm happy with it, but still have that same rattle-gurgle.

All Redline in my car's drivetrains. The 951 gets MT-90(GL-4), the rest get Redline 75-90(GL-5) or Redline ATF depending on what car.

Oh the 951 has Redline ATF in the power steering also... I had some extra and my old PS fluid had to be drain anyway so why not.
