Default How crucial are new bolts

I was going to buy the clutch bolt kit from paragon seen here: http://www.paragon-products.com/product_p/944cak.htm

I was wondering how crucial these bolts are? Would I be ok without them? Do they stretch over time or something?

And is it best to buy a clutch master cylinder online? Or do people usually buy them at a local auto parts place?

Thanks!

1) Have you pulled it apart yet, I just did mine, and yes I needed the new bolts as 2 of the old ones rounded out when removing them, and had to drilled.

2) I got mine from IAN at 944online.com, they have the entire egg roll for under 800 (clutch, PP, Pilot bearing, throwout Bearing, release fork rod, RF rod bearings, flywheel bolts, PP Bolts, rear main seal, and throwout bearing guide all in one kit) they also have the master and slave cylinder as a kit together, I may have these if I end up not needing/using them.( I bought master, slave, hose, and master feed hose from IAN) If I don't use I will be willing to part with them for a reasonable amount... I will follow up once car is back together...

3) I did not pull the rear main seal, as the entire engine needs a reseal, and will come out at some point in the future, not right now though.

ALSO make sure you are sure to check out the trans mount, I got the solid mount from lindsey racing. My car should be completely back together next week, and back on the road after an alignment...

I already have all of the heavy stuff (like clutch TO bearing etc...)
But it would be GREAT if you don't use your cylinders! Let me know as soon as you can.

Thanks!

Yes, clutch bolts are one time use. They stretch under torque. I have re-used them before, but they are Supposed to be replaced.

you've already spent so much for a new clutch, why not spend a few bucks more?

I guess I'm missing your reason for not wanting to replace them. Its cheap insurance.

Ah.. i just love getting attitude for asking a question....
It's $100+, and i wasn't sure if they were usually replaced because they get destroyed on removal, or if they stretch and wear.
Which is why I asked....

I'm not trying to give attitude. You will see how much blood, sweat, time...and tears... it will take you to do a clutch job on a 944. You would wipe your *** with a hundred dollar bill, and flush it, if it meant never having to do a clutch again.

Not saying the new bolts will make your new clutch last forever, but really, another bill is 100% worth it in this case. The DO stretch, and I you will round atleast one taking them out.

Those bolts are 100 dollars? I find that hard to believe.

I'm reusing the flywheel bolts because they came out without issue and look to be in good nick. I'm replacing the pressure plate bolts because the heads were partially stripped out by the time I got them out. I don't recall the FSM mentioning that the bolts needed to be replaced.

I have reused the bolts on 2 clutches... never even seemed like a problem. I think in general bolts only need replacing if they strip, round out, or break.

But that kit is more than just bolts.

The pilot bearing MUST be replaced. I.e. only a fool would leave it alone. Also the fork pin - sometimes they wear out and develop grooves from the bearings, and need replacing - check out your pin and judge for yourself. It can be changed later though. The needle bearings cannot be changed later, and they're not that expensive so I would just change them. Flywheel bolts are reusable but replacement is recommended - they are stretch bolts. The PP bolts are just plain bolts IIRC. If you want new PP bolts though you can just buy some M8 bolts from your local Ace for like $0.20 each.

I never replace the bolts unless they are stripped. I have replaced over 30 944/951 clutches with no problems. They have VERY low torque specs I remember its around 22 or 25 ftlb so if that will stretch the bolt, I think the bolt is defective from the manufacturer.
