Default Name this part: Crankshaft oil drive sleeve o-ring?

I got all of the parts for my front seal replacements, except for this little black o-ring, which is broken. I'm stuck mid-assembly, and want to order the replacement, but a part this small (and insignificant?) is hard to find.

Does anyone have the part number, or name of this part? It's the small black o-ring in the picture.

Not 100% sure, but I think it might be 900 174 049 40 (seal 28x2.58).

It looks like you are both right:

Pelican shows that 900-174-049-40 is superceded to 999-707-283-40.

It didn't seem right at first, since my o-ring was so compressed that it felt like formed plastic, and had a non-circular cross-section from being jammed against the sleeve. But that must be it! (It didn't help either that the replacement o-ring is green, and the OEM was black.)

Thanks for the insight guys!

Off I go to order an 81 cent o-ring that will cost $5 to ship. If only I could find a generic o-ring that was the right size locally. :-(

Of all the places... my local Porsche Dealership had one that just arrived in stock today, 100% coincidence. Not bad! Plus I got to drool on a few of their cars.

The o-ring they sold me was pink, which is a little disturbing, seeing as how it's a manly-man's car, but they assured me it was the right part.

Hooray, and thanks again for all the help.

I have a new OEM one, also from the dealer, and it is pink too!

It is also the same o-ring that fits on the water pump at the turbo supply fitting. Dealers usually have the pink ones. Why this does not come with the front engine reseal kit is beyond me. If you leave it out, it will make a huge mess and ruin your belts.

Default Updated info

I just want to add, for reference sake, that this O-ring was not originally an o-ring on (to the best of my knowledge) early 83 944's. I'm not sure about later models, but upon detailed inspection, this seal on my early 83 was molded plastic. I thought at first, that it was just compressed rubber, brittle from heat and pressure, but it was plastic. Hence the above-mentioned part supercedence.

So far, the girly pink o-ring seems to be doing its job.

Does anyone know if the balance shaft mylar seals come with the standard 944 front seal kit? I don't want to open the sealed package until I'm completely ready for reassembly. I bought everything I thought I would need for my rebuild at one time only to find out the o-ring for the oil pump isn't included. Makes me wonder what else I might be missing like front cam seal components.

Steve,
I recently got the front seal kit (from Paragon) and it did have the mylar seals. They were crumpled and broken but yes, they were in the bag with the other seals. If you're short on time I would recommend ordering extras. . . .

Thanks Jerry. I ordered them and the oil pump o-ring today from Sunset Porsche since I was snapping up that great special on the Factory Service Manuals. I'm sure some other roadblock will be thrown in my way for want of a $2 gasket or part.

My seals kits have also always come with the mylar washers.

That pink looks like the pink they use in ******.

2 each Lock nuts (for guard rail) 999.084.092.02

Notes:
1. Spacers and oil pump sleeve should be replaced if they have wear grooves, or burrs which could damage a new seal. Use some fine
grade scotch brite to clean up the old ones, but replace them if in doubt.
2. The front crank seal is prone to leaking if not installed perfectly. I use an old crank gear and oil pump sleeve that I honed the center
bore of to make it easy to slide on and off the crank, and use these two as pressing tools along with the crank bolt to press the seal
in squarely until flush with the oil pump face.
3. The balance shaft front housings must be removed to properly reseal them.
4. Oil seals and o–rings must be thoroughly lubricated before installation. I use silicone o-ring lube on o-rings and multi-purpose grease on seals.
5. For coolant, use a phosphate and silicate free coolant mixed with distilled water. Zerex Extreme Extended Life is one example.
