Default Need to ship a transmission cross country. Options?

So I have been trying to find a shipping company to deliver to me a transmission... only problem is it is a long way away. I've been having trouble finding a way to get it out here to Oregon.

For something big and heavy like this, how do you guys go about getting it shipped?

BIG Rubbermaid tote is the preferred method.

Just had a transaxle shipped from FL to MO. I just had the seller take it to the local UPS store. The packaged it and shipped it for less than $200.

If it's under 100lbs, greyhound is the cheapest option packaged in a large rubbermaid container. Should be around $100 from coast to coast

Did I miss a memo about a new transmission?

Hey Wipeout...

You're my crew chief, and Borys knows more about my race car than you do!!!! What you think just cause you are getting married that the racing season stops? Au contraire! It just means that I have to do more with every weekend! Looks like you are on wheel cleaning duty next race!

And FWIW, Borys is right on... it is my short 5th 924S tranny.

I've had bad luck with both UPS and FedEx... neither seems to stick to their 'guaranteed' delivery dates. Newegg has refunded me probably 200 dollars in the last year or so due to them not meeting shipping targets. I ship all my little stuff by Priority Mail... cheaper and faster. But they don't do big stuff.

Try Forward Air, they are the absolute cheapest place I have ever used to ship engines and transmissions. I am surprised about how many people have never heard of them. You can put stuff on a pallet and take it to one of their locations and then they load everything with fork lifts etc. Usually for a transmission, I would buy a nice box and package it up then shrink wrap it to a pallet. Look at their site for their locations www.forwardair.com

Its cheapest if the place your sending it to is within driving distance for the person getting the package to pick it up at their place.

I have had no problems shipping big items coast to coast using greyhound.

Yellow Freight. I parted out a couple of cars, and the engines/trans always went Yellow without a problem. One trick, tell them you want to open an account, new business, etc..tell them you plan on doing a lot of shipping, the rates go down about 60% when you do that. (!!!) Strap it to a skid, haul it to their truck dock, or pay extra for them to come get it. Slow, yet cheap. Across the country took about a week IIRC. It's been over a year since I last used them, can't remember my tranny shipping cost.

Greyhoud works, but man, those bus stations , bad news folks are thick there. I hope your experiences are different.
