YEa that TOP SIDE stuff is BS!!!!!, I pulled mine out the bottom with intake and everything else on, (removed rad and fans) and it did fine, Anyone pulling it top side just doesnt know how to go under or. Its easy as hell, Infact only the front of my 924S is on jack stands, Stable as can be. No problems here.

You are wiser then you know to agree with me, Sir Gator.

You're all being silly. I have done both top and bottom, more times then I'd like to admit. If you don't have the correct jack stands (tall enough), or you don't use an engine hoist (to lift the car), or you don't have a lift...it can get unstable. With the suspension on or off, or the radiator on or off. Sure you can do it, but it may not be very safe.

I mean, maybe I'm the only one that gets nervous when the car is rocking back and forth on maxed out jack stands 2 feet in the air while I climb under the 3000 lbs floating death box of doom. Jacking it up that high is another chapter in itself.

I dont think my 924S is unstable at all, I will measure the hight tomorrow and post back, The jack stands I used aree about 1 or 2 steps away from being maxed about, If placed correctly, The car will be fine given the proper saftey measures. If your car is unstable from side to side, then your doing something wron, I can go out to my garage right now and push/shake my 924S and its not gonna go anyway. SO please PLEASE check your jack stand placement

I did mine alone and never once felt the balance or safety was in question. One way or another going out the top you have to have it jacked up at some point to disconnect things accessible only from the bottom like the MM's, exhaust, steering, and numerous bolts. If you felt it was safe then, what's the difference later? The 6-ton jack stands are very stable IMO. It doesn't matter if the car is 12" or 24" off the ground if the jack stands are not set correctly the first time.

I'm with Steve -- car was solid as a rock. In fact, my jack stands were set only one inch higher than I set them for normal work. I did use a cherry picker to drop it though... Also, you have to be sure the rear is raised too, or you will need to raise the front too high to compensate. If done right, there is nothing unstable about it.

Lol, why the hell push the thing up in the air so far? I used a greasepit. Just jack it high enough to get the wheels off the ground and when the engine is out roll the car away on a creeper, or like I did: use a forklift.

LOL - Like we all have a greasepit and forklift just sitting around at home.

One thing to remember is that the front of the engine is heavier than the rear. You'll need some sort of support under the oil pan

Get an engine hoist and balancer, or rent them and some chain. Makes it way easier, having a hoist and the balancer.

Using above, lower engine to the floor while car is on 4 jackstands.

Cut two short sections of PVC pipe that fit over the torsion bar protrusions at the back of the car (the bits that stick out the sides). Put two unibody style jackstands under there (the kind that have the rounded out part, that dont work well with 944 lift points.

Using the chain, anchor each end to the lift points under the front frame rails (the two black brackets in front of the engine crossmember) and lift the front up. It swivels perfectly on the PVC pipe on the jackstands, totally stable and you dont have to worry about the car sliding back off the jackstands under the lift points.

Slide engine out from under car, lower front back down.

EDIT: Having dropped and installed the engine both ways, lifting the front is WAY WAY easier. Even with only one person. Going in and out the top is an enormous PITA. And you can also unbolt that bar that the radiator sits on, 4 allen head bolts. Then you dont have to worry about hanging the engine up on that.

See the chains on the right.

Brian, I'll try that method on the reinstall. The PVC pipe and lifting eyes on the frame are good tips. Saves a lot of jacking.

Saves a of jacking, ya. You also dont ever have to touch the chassis unless its on four jackstands, makes it very safe too. I had the engine out in no time at all with this method, as you can see from the pics I think the only thing I bothered removing was the distributor cap and rotor.
