Talking DIY Ball Joint Replacement

Just passing on my experiences with Sloan's ball joint kit. It took a little while to get the kit(2-3 weeks), but it finally got around to doing it this weekend. With air tools it took me a total of 5 hours. An hour of that was spent on a really stubborn snap ring. My overall impression of the kit is very high. All of the parts were of excellent quality, the instructions were great and it is really easy to do yourself. I was completely shocked/frightened when i first realized i needed new ball joints. The mechanic told me they were shot, this morning when i started i pulled on one of the wheels....i was able to move it at least a 1/2". Unbeleivable! <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" /> Oh well, problem solved now. Anyways, if anyone is considering this kit...you can do it yourself...its not that hard at all.

Did the 5 hours include removal and reinstallation of the A-arms (was R&R needed or can it be done on the car)? Any special tools? Kit cost?

5 hours included removing them from the car. They are only held on the car with 3 bolts really. I also updated the rear caster mount because I run 17" rims and porsche recommends you do that with 17's. You definitely cannot do this with the arms mounted to the car, but it takes less than 15 minutes to pull them off the car after you have it jacked up. The hardes part is dealing with the little snap rings. I don't know why porsche likes snap rings so much...but i'm really starting to hate them. I had problems with one, but got it eventually. My arms didn't need any other work besides the ball joint kit. While i had them out though, i blasted them with 2 cans of engine bright because they were filthy.

What is the rear castor mount update? I have just done the Sloan ball joint kit and while I wait on my new engine I might as well do the update as I too run 17's.

Thanks

The info for part numbers and what not is explained on this site.

There was a porsche bulletin put out stating that these were mandatory when upgrading to 17" wheels. Search the archives, i've seen it pop up a bunch of times.

Basically, the new castor mount decreases the amount of rubber and is much for sturdy. Without it I beleive that porsche feels the rear mount could break.
