Default hood strut warning

search through the threads for 'hood strut' and you'll see all sorts of warnings about cracking the windshield.

HEED THESE WARNINGS!!!

Just received some new struts. Pushed up on one side and snapped the strut in no problem. "Ha," I said to myself. "Once again those rennlist groupies don't know what they're talking about."

On to the passenger side the strut was about a 16th shy of fitting. I pushed up a little more then heard the telltale snap of windshield glass (yeah, I've heard that before on a different vehicle).

F@#%!!!

I finally got the strut in by compressing it (no small feat if you're a girly man, no problem for me of cours ) then wedging the end of a screwdriver between the shoulder of the strut and the mount on the hood. Which is what I should have done in the first place.

So...what are the recomendations for 951 window replacement?

dammit!

by the way, I'm being fecetious with the 'rennlist groupie' comment. Honestly, every question I've asked here has been answered 100% on the money.

just got a quote from safelite:

$289 for the non-antenna model
$489 w/antenna

I installed a separate antenna so looks like the non-antenna is the way to go.

still sucks. There's like a million other things for the car I could have spent that money on.

dammit!

Sorry man. I crack at least one windshield a year. I feel your pain. PS - I generally pay around 150-170 for my windshields. Are late ones that much more (antenna aside)?

BTDT, even after I had been warned. Mine just so happened to be on the pass. side too. One of the most depressing maneuvers ever for me since replacing a $15 part caused $400 worth of damage. I have heard safelite glass is wavy/cheap.

Dont get the non-antenna windshield! It wont fit! Trust me. Porsche didnt make a non antenna windshield for the later model cars. The non antenna windshield is for the earlier (pre 85 cars) that had the antenna in the fender. As much as the windshield company says it will work, it wont. It will be about a half inch short on both sides.

Sucks. i broke the windshield on my cabriolet doing this. 700 bucks.

The 968 Coupe windshield is available without an antenna and it's late model.

I had Safelite replace mine in my old 85.5 when I punched it out going down the highway and it fit perfectly and is still in that car 5 years later.

I feel suddenly reluctant to replace struggling hood struts.

What's the trick to avoiding damage?

I guess I'll have to dig deeper on the antenna/no antenna. I'm thinking the 968 windshield is the same?

One of the first things I did to my NA when I got it was put new hood struts on it. I didn't even know about rennlist at the time and just went at it. The way I did it was by putting on the lower end, compressing, getting the hood side in and done.

I'm perplexed how this would tank the windshield unless something goes awry - someone enlighten me so I avoid this disaster! Consequently, I want a new windshield anyway, perhaps I pull mine out and keep it as a spare for someone?

*hugs insurance policy covering one free windscreen replacement per year*

and I have had the hood off/reattched, no 'real' issues, besides being awkward, no cracked windscreen.

now to deal with that stone chip dead center.....

Do a search, there are some recent threads from my recent windshield replacement and a few others. There are several details to be aware of.

Something to keep in mind is the price difference for airbag and non airbag windshields. It's a special glass for the airbag models and you pay dearly for it.
