Default Borla exhaust question

I have poured over the boards looking for as much information about Borla mufflers as I can find, but I have a few specific questions that I couldn't find answers to.

1) I have an '84 with what I believe to be a 2" exhaust. I am planning on buying a muffler and having a shop bend up some pipe from the flange back. Will the 2.5" XR-1 mufflers work for me? Will I need an adapter piece?

2) Does anyone have experience with the "Turbo" mufflers that Borla has on their website. They are the only series that offers 2" inlet/outlet.

3) The 944 stock muffler is center-to-center right?

4) Will the old hanger brackets need to be cut off and welded onto the new hardware?

I took the car to tuffy this afternoon just to get a quote on installation. He quoted me a soft(nothing in stone) $120 to install whatever I give him. I just want to make sure this isn't the classic "you've got a porsche" screwjob. I still want to talk to an actual muffler/exhaust shop.

I would really appreciate any advise.

Thanks in advance!

You can make the pipe 2.5 inches at the flange. The XR-1 is pretty loud on an NA (from what I hear, there was a lister who had one and put in a resonator to drop the level a little). If you're having a shop make it, you will probably need to improvise with the mounting tabs. I have no experience with stock mufflers or with Borla's "Turbo" mufflers.

$120 sounds reasonable, and the muffler is around $125. It should sound great!
Good luck. Borla is a very good muffler and the shop is going to charge you for the amount of bends and material. The car will require very few of both. I would go with no cat, or for that matter anything but straight pipe and a XR-1. (just have piping made from the split manifold, to the muffler). It will be loud but with a good tone and more performance. The straighter the pipe the better...
Just my 0.02 cents

My car is an 87 NA, 2 .25" pipe. I put a Summit bullet type glasspack in place
of the cat and a Borla Turbo muffler. Sounds very good. I have a video on Youtube if you would like to hear it.

I forgot to mention the PO put on performance headers (not sure what brand), and removed the cat. The test pipe looks substantial, not just a piece of standard exhaust tubing. The test pipe appears to have a black coating on it, but I can't see the finish on the headers due to the header wrap. I presume it could be a Bursch system?

Having said that, will the XR-1 be too loud? The muffler is fairly shot on the Dansk with a bad rattle. I can't believe the new setup will be much worse.

Thanks for the replies.

A lister posted videos of his N/A with an XR-1. Do a search and tell us what you think.

Someone posted a video of a xr-1 and no cat on a n/a. Sounded like ****, way too loud as well.
