Stuttgart.....

I totally know what you're saying about the BK drive thru!!!

Had the same thing happen to me just the other night - I couldn't believe it!....and it was the Burger King drive thru also! Had a white supra infront of me and it kept Revvvvving it's engine over and over again. Seriously, what is up with that? What does that even mean?

Last night while out getting some KFC, I was driving down the strip and had a Jetta with the "full race package" blows by me. I didn't run after him or anything. The next set of lights comes and I stop, only to see a cop coming over the hill at the intersection. Light turns green and the Jetta guns it. I pull away at normal speed (I saw the cop, he didn't). I start driving down the street (Jetta has slowed down now - most likely cause he knew I wasn't gonna race). As I'm coming up on the bumper of the now slow-going Jetta, I see lights in my rear view. Automatically I think, "Busted!!! Got ya Jetta-boy!!"....but, instead the cop pulls ME over.

When she approached the car, I was all, "Ahhhhhh - what did I do???". She said, "You were going to fast!!". I told her she may have been confused, because she pulled over the wrong car. She said she saw the Jetta and said I was instigating him!! Anywho - I got a "warning" (which I know I got because I wasn't even speeding).

Another by-product of Ricers!

Well, megatron: are YOU speaking out of experience or from what you've read/seen on the movie screen? I've given you a couple of examples, let's hear yours: after all, turnaround's fair play.
[quote]As for not-so-legal activities that occur in streetdrag circles, the same happens in any highschool, college, nightclub, sports game, house party, etc. where there is a concentration of young people with money. There's nothing particularly different about streetdrags that make it any different. It's just another form of recreation that young people do.

So you're saying that if illegal activities happen everywhere, does that make it right? I think not.

Before I digress from the topic of RICE (Too late, I fear: sorry!) here's what I feel:
1. The Rice sub-culture is about attitude: whether you have a car built for speed or show, or somewhere in between: it's all about attitude.
2. Rebellion / anarchy is a big part of the ricer image: some are just 'posers, others are rebellious.
3. I know that not all ricers are 'cap bustin' thugs, but many of them are.
4. To each his own, as long as it doesn't effect others. I don't care how many Civics blow by my Porsche: just don't cause an accident with me! Don't steel my engine parts, and don't mess up my (or other's lives) by your stupidity!
5. (Here comes the usual Z-man speech): If you must race, take it to the track!
6. And I know, arguing about here won't get me anywhere, or so I've been told...

Regards,
-Z-man.

I have to agree with Stuttgart's explaination for the ricer crowd. Where I am from this describes about 99% of the "rice" cars that I see on the streets. It is exceptionally annoying to have to listen to some punk revving his fart can equiped car. I live on a rather busy road and I have to listen to that crap until the wee hours of the morning.

As Stuttgart mentioned, it does no good to race them when given a chance to bruise their ego. I pass the same Integra (fart can equiped) at least twice a week coming home from work. Everytime he revs his noisy *** car up around me ... it never stops. I showed him twice that his car was slow, but he still continues the crap. What is the point? Now I just *attempt* to ignore it.

I have to admit that I personally do not care what Joe Blow does to his car. I do not mind sharing my opinion when I think it is ugly, but the car (or whatever) is not mine therefore not my business. The fart cans (in my opinion) are another story. I have to listen to this crap all the time (in my car, at home, etc...) I thought that most areas had noise ordinance laws ... should these not apply in this situation?

C’mon, people!
These ‘Rice-Racers’ are just like us, Car-people. Yes, it’s a hobby. Yes, it’s a lifestyle. Yes it’s annoying… Remember, we were all stupid kids once! Some of us grew-up, others didn’t. That’s kind of obvious by the responses some of you have posted…
Anyway, who’s to say what ‘rice’ is? Some could say that our penchant for making our n/a cars look like 951’s is ricey. Carbon-fiber dashes and steer wheels/shift ***** are ricey…Blah, blah, blah… It’s all in the aesthetic of the owner. In the sport-compact circles, stickers and fart-cans, and big spoilers are cool. Simple. Don’t ask why, it’s a different world. With Harley-Davidson owners, it’s all about the loud straight pipes. Same thing. Just accept the fact that people like different things, stop criticizing, and enjoy the hobby.
Myself, well, that’s another story… (Porsche content) My ’84 n/a is modified to my personal liking, as well as a calling card for my custom shop. Stock exterior bodywork with some ‘ricey’ bolt-ons… A carbon splitter on the air dam, fog lights replaced with brake ducts, removed bumper pads, 2 ¼” projector driving lights cut-into the bumper, rear turbo spoiler, and (gasp!) a ‘tuner wing’ on the rear. Of course, all the standard 944/951 goodies, and a Huntley supercharger in the works. Sure, the splitter and rear wing take away from top-speed (140ish) but what I gain in stability at 80-90 is amazing… Besides, it looks mean-as-hell when parked at the local cruise-spots… Personal expression. Live it/ Love it/ Deal with it… -Flame-On -LLG

Maybe with all the weird aftermarket stuff the damn thing just wont idle.

Mostly I dislike the attitude. The whole urban tuff-guy/rap/ricer shtick falls real flat for me after 9/11. Christ--these punks want to be bad-***. Bad-*** is flying a plane into a skyscraper and snuffing out 3000 innocent lives. These guys are just wanna-be's. Yes, we all were young once. Think god we grow up (at least most of us... ).

Cheers,
Chris

YOu call a 80's sentra (automatic!) with a green hood and a gigantic apexi exhaust with a gigantic wing that weighs more than the car a work of art?

YOu gotta be kidding me, They give everybody a bad name.

I call it something else, I call it garbage.

That better not be what I think it is in the backround. That's an insult to Porsche right there.

What, it's my 968 with the hatch up so I can put my race Hoosiers back in after a day at the track.

Or what, is it an insult to Porsche that there's three comparatively-capable cars in the foreground? I can say there's not an ounce of "rice" to those other cars there.

I'm definitely not for rice, don't get me wrong. It sickens me each time I see it. What annoys me is when people assume negative things about an entire subculture. Doing that is no different than taking the prevailing attitude in racism.

NOT EVERYONE in the import world is a RICER, nor are RICER's all (not even 1%) so-called "thugs". Crime's not right, but there are just as many criminals in general population than there are in the so-called RICER community.

This entire arguement is going nowhere and seems to be another case of older folks complaining about younger folks' lifestyles. I'm 25, so the last few years, I was smack in the middle of the this demographic. I've just happen to choose watercooled Porsches (944NA, 944S2, now a 968 and 951) as my cars. I've lived in the circles, and seen what happens in it. It's not all (or even much at all) bad.

The import crowd are car-folks just like us, many of whom are as enthusiatic and as knowledgable as any other car-person. Yes, ricers are the bottom-of-the-barrel in the import world, but still, they're not all criminals.

I never said they were criminals. I feel that if the car is not born into a sports car, don't try and make it into one. Those are just honda civics in that pic. None of them even come close to what a Porsche is. The fact that you even compared the two is beyond me. That's the point, anything that's not a sports car and is made into one, is rice. A civic can never be a sports car, no matter how hard you try. I'm 20 years old, and I know for a fact what everyone thinks when they see a civic with big rims, or a body kit. RICE, and that's what they should think because that is what it is.

SilverBullet951:

And we wonder why so many people stereotype Porsche owners as a bunch of narrow-minded elitists?

I like racing, and I believe that the hard numbers speak volumes more than anything else. I've twice been part of a national-champion Formula SAE team, any many of the things we did were not as "pure" as one may think, but were done to win a competition and were effective in achieving that goal. The same holds for any car in competition, be it a Civic or a 996 turbo.

That yellow Civic can keep up with my 968 in the twisties and can outrun it in a straight line. That 180SX is the most popular sports car platform in Japan, and that guy's also got an SE-R that runs 12's in the quarter and handles great. The RSX there is plenty quick as well. Regardless of how they did it, these cars are producing the numbers, so what's wrong with that. Measurable performance IS NOT RICE. RICE is posing to be be performant when the car is incapable.

Look, I'm not saying don't be proud of your Porsche, I'm just saying it's not the be-all-end-all. I don't think there's anything wrong with likening it to cars of comparable performance.

Porsche is just a brand name that can come and go just as easily as any other. If Porsche owners are viewed as a bunch of narrow-minded elistists, how many TRUE perfomance enthusiasts will actually aspire to own one? And we complain that Porsche doesn't put out any "pure" performance cars anymore...

As for the criminal comment, sorry that wasn't a reply to your post, rather some of the others.

What a bunch of cr@#, this whole thread brings a rather elitest attitude to what is just a really nice 20 year old car. They are not radical racers they are just kids, I agree with many of you that racing should only be done at the track, but then I think that racing isn't DE/AutoX/PCA events, so flame away it is one of the rights you have living in a free country.

I will climb back in my hole now and go flog a couple of my managers for fun.

Silver:

Toss enough money and intelligent engineering at any automobile and it can be made to handle as good as any other, including Porsche. To think only one make of car has the "pedigree" to be called a good handling capable vehicle is elitism. Sure, there are "wannabees" out there, but there are "wannabees" right here, and they own something with a Porsche crest on it. "How can I make my 9xx faster? How do I install 9xx brakes into my 9yy? Installed a larger turbo today"; all things that the original design did not have. Does that constitute rice? How about white dial instruments (I like em!!) and after market 400 watt audio systems? Car didn't come with that. After market steering wheels, billet pedals, Recaro seats, fatter tires....Every item can be defended as adding something to the car, but basically the changes are to enhance the vehicle in the eye of the beholder.

I have said it before. I used to belong to the NHRA and attended meetings, even in my 944. Very few folks there "dissed" another person's efforts. If they did, they were soon told by the majority that that kind of behavior was unacceptable (maybe in not so nice terms!!) I absolutely LOVED an Opel GT with a 5 liter Chevy in it. It may have been a bit nose heavy, but no one could fault the quality of the work that went into it. The same with many other "one of a kind efforts". Dedication to a dream. And, the dreams are different for different people.

All that being said, there are those who will never change their minds and those who, in time will open theirs, even if it is only a little. Imagine...I am older than most of you and still think it is neat to think outside the box...

Cheers, all!!!

Personally, if it doesn't make my car safer of perform better, then I don't want it. I think a lot of what these kids are doing is just crazy, completely wasting thier (or parents) money. I would like to be the guy making some of the parts for this stuff though. I mean you see it every day, and I can't help but wonder how much they spend on these cars. I saw one Civic the owner claimed to have an $11,500 flame paint job. I sure hope it was Glasurit or Sikkins paint.

I am fine with whatever they want to do to their cars. I just laugh. I mean how big of a wing do you really need. Maybe I should design one, a few hours on AutoCAD and a trip to the laser shop and I'd be in business. What I don't like is to see them "buzzing" around recklessly like most of them do. They always want to race the 928, I mean it is just stupid.

For the longest time I was oblivious to the japanese manufacturers' potential of building a true sports car or even a well-handling economy car. That is until I started learning more about vehicle dynamics and suspension geometry. It is infact quite remarkable that Honda was able to build a vehicle with 4-wheel independent suspension that has the capability of handling twisties with ease and for such an affordable car. In fact, I look back at my old VW's rear suspension setup and realize that it is in fact quite ordinary (although effective).

I applaud those who spend money on their vehicles to improve their performance, but I see that many are too quick to judge and have given a stereotype to what seems like ALL Honda (or any other JPN make) drivers. In my book, 'rice' is 19" chrome wheels w/4" drop, neon lighting (be it on the hood or under the car), a non-functional wing. Simply put... All Show, No Go.

There's quite a gray area to all of this...I've got German plates on my 944, and two white stripes over the front left wheel well (family thing). Don't add nothin' but weight, but they look good. Somewhat conflictingly, I will point and laugh every single time I see "louvre" decal a la the Z3, some bigass wing on a car that won't break 90, and a **** exhaust on grandma's old ride.

It's not that they're young. This stuff has been ridiculous since I was in highschool. It's not that it's getting away performance through spending money. It's not even being concerned with a certain image they're putting out to attract chicks or get props or whatever. Hell, it's only slightly about cars. It's that he's wearing a huge, puffy, metallic gold jacket and it's ****ing ridiculous.

As a side note, I have no problem with imports. Porsche people who do are ignoring some truths. Some of them suckers really perform. That said, they're not my character and I'll be damned if I trade my 150hp, 20 year old 944 with all it's "quirks" for a new RSX. Unless I could sell it and get an S2.

As a side side note, you ever see a Diablo, Countache, or C4 Corvette with one of those huge wings on the back? They look great. I realize it's a bit different on a 200mph car, but even if it took off 20mph, I'd want one on my Countache.
