Default Help - Dad is in trouble with his daughter!!!

I disassembled the torque tube on Kristy's 1987 944 turbo, expecting to install 4 new bearings that are on my shelf.

I found one badly mangled inner sleeve - not a good sign for our track day in Alabama on Wednesday!

Does anyone have either:
1) a spare delrin sleeve;
2) a good used sleeve; or
3) access to a lathe and the skill and time to make one?

I have a block of nylon that I believe is suitable for bushing material.

Of course this is worth $$$ to me!

Thanks,
Bob

I love the American work ethic - A machinist advertised his services on Craigslist.
He answered his work phone today @ 3 PM. I dropped the specs off @ 5 PM and he will call later today when the bushings are ready. He charges $70 / hr. and estimated less than 2 hrs to do the job.

Not bad!

Where did you source the bearings, if you don't mind me asking?

Ah... "bearings" yes... however, I am still on the hunt for the elusive "bearings" that go in there...

How did you select those over other bearings with the same dimensions? I have not pulle mine yet, but understand the original bearings were 6006ZZ C5. Have you used these yourself -- do they seem to work fine?

You are correct, the originals are NSK 6006ZZC5. The RS designation in the link above denotes that the bearings have a single contact oil seal, the ZZ designation on the original bearings denotes that they have a double shield. Also the RS means they are not OEM as it is not a designation that NSK use, they are either SFK or ***. You are better with the OEM double shield (ZZ) than the single oil seal (RS).

BTW the C5 denotes the clearance. C5 means an extra loose clearance, C2 is the tightest. As there is no designation on the link it means they are of 'normal' clearance. OEM requires a clearance of C5.

Let me know if want to know any further tech details about bearings, I did a lot of research before I replaced mine.

Thanks. Based on that, what bearings did you use? Where did you get them? And, have they withstood the test of time?

I found similar info (re 928 TTs) here http://www.nichols.nu/tip799.htm

Sounds like they used bigger clearances on the 951 (v the 928) or they changed over time...?

Got them from the same place as the link above only ordered ZZ double shielded

http://www.vxb.com/page/bearings/PRO...FQsrswods1lHwA

They told me the clearance was C4 though it doesn't say that on the website. I have had no problems in over two years and am about to do the other car, a fun job (not) for the summer in FL

I think some models used C4 and others C5, IMO I don't think it makes much of a difference as long as you are in the upper range of clearance.

I have a pdf document with all the specs for these bearings that I can email to anyone if they need it.
