Default Code reader?

So I've often thought it might be useful to have a code reader for my 944. Are they useful? Any point in getting one?

And also, is there a specific type I should be getting? How does this one look for example?

Isn't there a socket near the fuse panel or something?

What, the 944 doesn't use codes? I assumed it did.

its available from 1988 onwards.
the 88 code system and readers are very basic but it improved loads by 1990.

There is a socket in front of the fuse box area where you can plug in special tool 9246 and it will give flash codes if there is a problem. I have the tool which is also used to properly set the idle, but good luck finding one as I have never seen another one.
