Angry Need help in No. California

Well, I had a perfectly clean drving record for years - last accident was in late 80s, and no tickets at all. Guess it had to happen - and it did. I got hit by a pick-up truck with no lights on last Friday night, and my wonderful 924S is no more. It gave it's life for me, I walked away with minor injuries despite getting hit almost head by this truck which was traveling at almost 50 mph.

This is the good part - by the time the CHP got there, of course he had his lights on and told them they were always on. So now it looks pretty bad for me - the only witness was my husband, who was driving the car behind me.

So, to get to the point - sorry if I'm rambling a bit here, it's probably the vicodin - I have a car 400 miles from home that I need to dispose of, because I don't have collision coverage, only liability on this car.

If anyone is interested in checking for any parts that would be worth salvaging, the car is in Sonoma, CA. email me for details. If I could get my seat and harnesses out of it, you're welcome to anything else that's usable. But since I'm paying storage, the car won't be there for long, probably no more than a week.

I really don't know if this applies, but at least up in Northern Humboldt there's a little game guys play with their buddies. You get a little buzz on and then drive around in your trucks with your lights off. The goal is to sneak up behind your bud and then hit him with the high beams and scare the **** out of him. Seriously--I've never played it myself, but have friends who did in high school.

Good luck. That looks serious--amazing that you're ok. I dread being hit by a truck or SUV, but looks like Porsche made these safer than I thought. Airbags?

WOW! Glad you are Ok. You must have been 5 point belted in pretty good to just walk away.

BTW, it may be a little late to do anything about this, but there are forensic people that look at light bulb filaments to give clues to crashes. I know they can tell if the bulbs were on or not if they were then broken in the crash. Not sure how strong an analysis they can come up with if there are no damaged filaments in a case like yours, since the guy had them off and then turned 'em on after the crash.

But I would check this out a bit as maybe some of the truck filaments couldn't have survived a 50 mph crash while burning with an XX% probability. Would certainly help support your and husband's version of what actually happened.

That was a serious shunt, you're lucky to be OK. Good luck with the insurance, did the cop lay any charges?

Glad you'r ok Patricia!!

When looking at the car it seems like if it has been hit on the front passenger side which seems a bit strange.

Was the pick-up in the wrong lane or did any of you guys turn left to avoid the accident?

Pretty amasing structure quality in these cars if it won't get more damage after an impact force of almost 100 mph!!

I notice that the roof gave in on the impact force but not the A-pillars, amasing!

After my first 951 was totaled by a drunk driver I eventually learned what a neighbor told me when I expressed surprise that he lent out his airplane regularly to friends,(I was much younger then) "It is a really nice plane and I'm attatched to it, but I like my friends better and it is, after all, just a plane, I can buy another one of those, but can't buy my friends if they are totaled" Good luck and hope you recover fast.

Thanks, everyone, for the sympathy, encouragment, and advice. Believe me, I'm already looking for a replacement, another 924S or a later model 944, and I'll be back out there.

I found a friend (one of my TracQuest buddies) who is going to take a look at the car today and see what is salvageable.

The car is - was - an '88 with racing seat, harnesses, roll bar, and racing steering wheel, so no airbags. (I was on the way to Sonoma for a weekend with hubby before going to the TracQuest DE event at Sears Point today & tomorrow). I think I'm glad I didn't have airbags, as I am short and sit very close to the wheel. My friend told me these cars are built so that the sunroof will pop and absorb energy, the tunnel also. Hooray for Porsche engineering!

I was starting to make a left turn, and, since my husband was caravaning behind me, I actually looked to make sure there was time for both of us to turn. I could see two cars off at a distance, we both thought there was plenty of time. The pickup was a dark maroon color, I never even knew he was there until he hit me. He never slowed or braked ( we went back and checked for skid marks), nor did he swerve to avoid me.

The CHP didn't tell me anything, except that the report will be ready in 10 days to 2 weeks. They certainly didn't cite me at the time, and they didn't even give me the other driver's info. They just took our statements, cleaned up the mess, and hustled me off to the emergency room.

<img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" /> So now I play the waiting game - wait to feel better, wait for the reports, wait to find a new car . . . I'm counting on you guys to keep me entertained with the board while I'm waiting.

Thanks again to all of you,

Pat

There is a reason that these small cars weigh 3000lbs.

Luckily good handling also translates into stiffer chassis, and another reason I wanted to get one.

Glad it worked for you Pat.

There is a 924 in the local PCA newsletter here for $1500-obo, I can dig up the specifics if you'd like.

Bad as that car looks, I'm glad to hear you're OK.

Glad to see that you made it out of that mess.
I see someone else mentioned it above but trained investigators can test the lights of the truck that hit you and can determine if they were on or off in the collision. My daughter experienced this in a night time accident and won the court case.
