Default priming oil pump

I have a dry oil pump and cannot get pressure built

I have heard a number of ideas on how to prime the pump.

I want to hear yours.

please reply

Slight compressed air down the dipstick tube while cranking. Sometimes that has worked for me, sometimes it has not. Another is to pull the filter, put a 1/2" hose with a funnel on it in the hole closest to the block, fill the funnel with oil, crank the pump counter clockwise for awhile, then put the filter back on and try cranking again. I had a car this winter that would not build pressure via the dipstick trick, but once I did the oil filter trick, it built pressure.

i usually just pour a quart down the hole that the oil filter screws onto, fill the filter up alittle and then top the oil off in the engine. Pull the DME and crank until there is pressure. As long as everything is pre-lubed it wont hurt anything.

That's funny. Unless your oilpump is completely devoid of oil (ie: degreased) it should build pressure. The problem is it will always leak a little bit so the only thing you can do is crank it with the starter. Either that or you have a leak in the pickup tube? (bad o-ring?).
We bought a shortblock from a scrapper, rebuilt it, cranked it and oil pressure pegged at nearly 5 bar instantly.

+1 The last rebuild that I did on my 968 engine seemed to take some time to prime, but it finallly did.

The 1/2" hose trick plus a funnel worked for me.
