Post Has anybody rebuilt their own steering rack?

Wondering if anyone has tried it as I'm considering the Porsche 944 Power Steering Rack Seal Kit on ebay...

Mike, if you try this out keep us updated. I was crawling around under the car on the battery cable project and noticed my rack is starting to get wet with red fluid so will probably have to do something about this one of these days.

I have done a couple of them now and they are not to bad to do. You can get the re-seal kits directly from Transtec for less. The kits run about $35-40.00 delivered IIRC.

check out the previous thread below:

Hope that helps,

Mike B, i was talking to someone awhile back- I forgot his email. I found him on the 944 newsgroup site. Just go there and look for Steering Rack rebuild and his email is right there. He was real nice and was going to walk me right thru the whole process but I got stcuk at one point with the disconnecting the U-joint from the rack- then I decided to take it to a mechanic... and spent big money. Anyhow he said it was pretty easy.. I would look him up and politely ask him for advice- he was real cool.

Also, don't buy from these ebay sellers that are charging$70+ for something you can get from Transtec for $20-30 shipped to your front door. Call them directly- they'regood peeps. IF you don't want to rebuild it yourself- I believe Transtec would know places locally where you can take your rack to get it rebuilt with their kits. I think I found one around $175 with 1 year warrranty. Sorry for the long post but I spent a lot of stupid time with this f'ed up rack.

Thanks Meng...I'll have a look for that fellow...Paying $70 for something that costs half as much kinda rubs me the wrong way too...I expect Transtec will get back to me Monday...I'll post the info here incase anyone else is wondering...

Another example of rennlist saving me $$$$

you could try asking if this Transtech place offers direct replacement (ZF) seals just to make sure they are not some other seals that will not last.

Also, that ebay auction in question ( my ebay auction) offers my assistance to walk you though it and give you any help I can.(I've done 4 myself now) Try to get any "application assistance" out of your transtec place.

It took me a long time to put together those parts and $70 is more than a fair price for them. Please try to learn all the facts before you disregard someones product as just the same as another. God, meng, You ignorance really gets on my nerves.

sorry, but I have just one more thing to add. Thats like saying "why buy a light kit from IceShark when you can go to performance products and pick up some hella bulbs and some H4 xenons for less than half as much."

sorry to the rest of the rennlisters reading this but for some reason that assuming comment just got under my skin.

I was going to buy one of your seal kits and thought I would explore the collective wisdom of this board...I had forgot about Transtec until reminded about Rob...

A question though since you responded...Does your package include detailed instructions / photos to help with the rebuild...That would be valuable...

I am in the process of putting together a how to with pic's and posting it to my web server. (the pic's are taken I am just working on the write up)It should be done some time in the coming week.
I had a few others that purchased the kits that are waiting for the page to be done so they themselves can start.
Yep, the page address (or printed copy if you like) will be included with the current auction. And yes, for those of you who I am shure will ask this, I will post the "how to" publicly when my current stock of seal kits are depleted and I am done selling them.

sflraver- no need to get angry... Excuse my ignorance with the part as I did not have any experience with them personally because I ended up getting a rack that was re-manufactured (my mechanic got it for me) The transtec is indeed $20-$30 (I did purchase them from there but never used it, read aobve for reason) and I am not sure what the price for the OEM ZF ones are. If you say they are worth around that, I have no reason not to believe you. But I am sure the transtec ones are not OEM ZF.

I guess I spoke too soon because too mnay ebayers try to rip people off. I'm sure you understand- just wanted look out for a fellow 'lister

meng- Sorry about that. It had been one of those days for me (Christmas lights giving me trouble) and I didn't mean to go off like that. The seal kit I am offering right now is a quality product and it took me a great deal of time to put it together. I hope you can understand why I was concerned.

I do understand how some ebay auctions are real ripoffs.... "the electric turbo boat fan"

No harm no foul, everone's cool and hopefully we'll learn more about the difference between the two products- Which BTW i think you should emphasize and address in your Ebay auction (I know you already do this but really emphasize)- If you emphasized the fact these are OEM ZF seals made for the OEM ZF rack and that you would provide with specific direction on how to complete the rebuild, it would make this (IMO) very much worth what you are charging and simultaneously address the difference between products. The person I was talking to directed me toward getting the transtec seals. Anyway, hope no hard feelings remain.

Sflraver:

You don't mention the 968 in your ebay ad. Do you know if there is actually a difference, or will your seal kit fit the 968 also?

cheers

Derek - I am not sure on that one. Maybe someone on the list could cross refrence the racks to see if they are the same in the 944 as the 968. I need to get a set of the pet manuals... or would that cross over from the 944 to the 968 even be in there?

Let me make a few phone calls and find out and I will post an answer up.
