i'm not sure if it has this function. i know the exchange client (outlook 2000/xp) will do it, but again i've only done it when it's used with an exch. server ('out of office' function) and not for pop mail client (like outlook express).

a. you'd have to leave the machine & app open and running (need a ups just in case)
b. you'd have to have it periodically check for mail and send mail at the same time
c. if there is a Rules wizard, you might want to start there

nonehteless, i dunno... check <a href="http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?id=fh;[ln];kbinfo" target="_blank">http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?id=fh;[ln];kbinfo</a> for any relevant info

Just a thought,

I have been trying to combat spam and virus attacks here at work and one of the things most anti-spam groups recommend is that you do not use auto-response in your e-mail program. Sounds kind of silly, but some companies get really annoyed when they get any kind of frivolous e-mail, and an auto-response stating you are on vacation or whatever is just that. Believe me, we have been added to blacklists in the past for lesser offenses (we do not spam in any way, shape or form).

Also, if you get spam, you know you should never open or reply to it right? The reasons are:

1) if you open the e-mail (or use preview pane) you can launch any script that may be in the body of the message.

2) if you reply to the e-mail (or even just open it,depending on what type of server it came from), even to "opt out" you have just confirmed that your e-mail address actually is a real address. Now you will get even more junk. Lucky you!

Well guess what an auto-response does? It confirms your e-mail address is an actual address for the spammer.

Instead, your best bet, if you do anything at all, would be to selectively send an e-mail to anyone you are expecting might try to or need to contact you over the period you are away letting them know you will be out.

I do a lot of php web work, and I end up in #php on efnet looking for help regularly. I have the ssame kind of host as everyone else in the world, but I have a local test server on Windows XP running IIS.

"That's your problem" is what they always tell me.

No, that's NOT my problem. My problem is I was using the wrong syntax or forgot a semi colon somewhere.

It's so hard to find good help. If you're not going to, don't offer explanations like "use something else."

First you have to create the message that you want to send. Create it like you would any other message.
Go to file Save As.
Save it.

Then in the message rules locate that file.

If there is a webmail interface to your mail server, most allow you to turn on an auto-respond feature. That would be the easiest way IMO, and you wouldn't need to leave your computer on.

You don't need to reply to spam for the spammer to know your e-mail address is valid. If it comes back to them from a postmaster they automatically remove you, otherwise you stay on the list. The only thing a reply might do is get your address put on an "elevated" list that says your e-mail gets actually gets checked. Attempts at trying to avoid spam are futile. If you use your e-mail often, you're going to get spam. That's just how it is right now.
