And it's not like these cars are unattainable for a high schooler. I saved and saved and finally bought my S2 when I was a senior in high school, and I've paid for all its related expenses. My car cost twice what a good 8 valve 944 goes for, so it's not hard to do, in my opinion. There were tons of kids who drove $5k cars they paid for themselves, but they just happened to be Civics or Camaros or something.

Cool post.

Some reactions from people who see or hear of my 944 na:
1. How do like driving with the engine in the back of the car?
2. How can you afford a Ferrari?
3. How much did that cost you? (Half than you paid for your new car 3 years ago, but it's now worth more)
4. How do you fit in that thing? (I'm 6'5")
5. Do you race it?
And of course: How fast does it go?

Some one off conversations:
Other guy: How much did your Porsche cost?
Me: Aus$16,000
Other guy: (not hearing well) $600,000
Long silence while he works out whether he'd pay $600,000 or not.
Me: No $16,000
Other guy: Wow, I thought it was like $100,000 or something

Another experience driving in a Holden Caprice 5.7L engine with a chauffeur friend:
Me: Wow this car has more kick than my Porsche.
Chauffeur: Oh yeah I've seen that thing in the parking lot. This doesn't go as fast as that though. I drove my bosses 996 turbo and that puts this to shame. (So my 17 year old 944 na must be as fast as a 996 turbo now)

I got the above reaction from someone else too, saying they'd driven a 964 turbo, asking if my car is as quick.

Finally on the weekend at a funeral, I was standing outside in the carpark, talking about cars as two people in the parking lot had just bought new cars. I commented that one of the car's was a good buy and they said "Yes but it's nothing compared to the Porsche", this was seconded by the other person who'd just bought a car. In total there were probably 20 cars in the lot and only 2 cars I could see were cheaper than mine, both owners of the new cars paid more than 3 times what I paid for mine.

Thankyou for letting me vent,

Sam.

I have two ways of talking about the porsche to someone who asks about it:

1) Everyone.

"Yeah, it's one of the best handling cars ever made, it was pretty cheap, and I enjoy driving it. It's fun."

2) My Grandmother.

her: "A PORSCHE?!? Ohhhh Joe, I dunno about that, god, are you sure it's a good one? Is it expensive? Oh dear, I wish you'd buy a toyota or something."

me: "It's more of a Volkswagen, grandma, don't worry about it."

her: "well, ok"

There are times when the 944's VW/Audi history can come in handy.

Wow. This discussion turned into something that reminds me of when my friends all get togeather to smoke some wackey TB and talk about "life". Some very good points, lots of good conversation. I'll just put in my 2cents. I agree with Tariq, if you want attention, buy a 911. If you want a sports car, buy a 951. Girls never know what it is, I had one girl in the car for 1/2 hr before she says, "what kind of car is this?" Most guys say, "is that a 8 or a 6 cylinder?" No a 4 banger.....Wanna put some$$$ on the 5.slow? Only rice want to race....not worth the time. Vettes, vipers, ect think they are wasting thier time too. Little do they know...... The only respect I get from other drivers is usually from another Porsche. Few know what a 951 is. I even had one firebird pull up next to me revving his engine. So I say lets go guy........."why would I waste my time on a Rx7?" he says. He never got the chance to find out what I was driving. He went home thinking he got beat .......no,no....spanked by an Rx7. The best part about it was he had a buddy in the front seat to tell all thier buddys he got beat by an Rx7.hee hee hee

Lay off Sam guys,
I agree, part of the automobile experience is working your butt off to put your blood and sweat into your labor of love but how do you all know Sam didn't work for his 944's? Yeah I know it seems unlikely but still, even if he's blessed with 3 944's how does that make his love for the cars any less? Some people just have more than others and that's fine, even if they are in their teens. Be greatfull with what you have and get on with life.

yeah, i don't know the extent of the situation, he did say "dad has bought me" so that kinda laid it out for us. it has been my experience that those high school and college students who's parents have bought them cars tend not to give a crap about their cars. sam may very well love his cars like i love mine, but the truth remains that the pride that goes into driving that beautiful car every day is amplified by paying for and performing regular maintenance on it with your own hard work.

so sam, glad to hear you've got such good taste in automobiles and i hope they last you forever like i KNOW mine will if you haven't already, take time to learn the history of each of your cars, as much as you can about them. i know where all my babies came from, and where they're going... nowhere except the open road with me behind the wheel!

I cannot take credit for buying my 944. My father gave me the 5 grand to buy it after I researched them for a few months. then when I spun the #2 bearing My father paid for the 5 thousand dollar repair bill. he would like to buy a 993 but I am afraid I keep putting that goal further down the line for him! He pays for it only because I love the car and work on it every chance I get. I have put 3 grand in it my self and I pay him back a few hundred dollars each month. some day it will be paid off and then I can put it in storage and buy a 951. I will let him drive that and It will really put a smile on his face!

I am 23 and have put countless hours of blood, sweat, and tears (and$$$)into my car. 95% of my spending$$ goes into my car. The rest is for bills, car, rent, car, food, car, ect. My love affair with porsche started about 5 years ago with a 1977 bkl/blk 924. I needed a beat up car and saw this one for 1000$........A porsche for $1000! Why not. Needless to say, I saw enormous potential......and am where I am today. A extremely happy 951 owner. Having never went to high school, and been working HARD since I was 14, I do value my car more. But once you get bitten by the bug we all have, earned or not, you have a deep apperciation for your porsche.

Yes I stil maybe in high school, but I do know alot about my cars. And ya'll got the idea that I was a guy...after all mainly guys are into cars..well..here's a girl that knows alot about her Porsches. I've been around them since I was 8 years old and I've learned soooooo much about them. I started working on my dad's 1974 914/6 race car. The first stick shift that I drove was a 1986 930 4 speed. Then I started working on every other Porsche that came into the shop. So I've learned alot over the years. And yes, my dad did buy me the 3 944 Supers (944S), but he also bought 2 so we could sell them. So we're only keeping one. I have worked very hard on keeping my grades up so that I could keep them. That was the deal. Dad said that if I kept my grades up he would buy me a Porsche cause I've wanted one for a long time...well I've had really really good grades all year and he bought it for me. I don't brag about having my car to my friends. If they want to know something...I'll tell them. We sometimes sit in class and talk about Porsches and cars all day. So I don't brag as much as they do..they tell me how their getting ready to buy a NOS kit and all this...well I don't really care cause I'm not into all that kind of car stuff. Sorry if I made some of ya'll mad, but you know...I do work to keep my cars in good running shape............

glad to hear you're up on your car... for reference the international bank of dad technically bought me mine, and i have reimbursed him, but just the same spending hours and buckets of sweat underneath the car do give one a greater appreciation for the time Porsche put into its design... its nice to be around so many who actually know cars

Wow, I think you cleared everyting up Samm...As for a girl your age that knows cars (and Porsches for that matter, ) I think that is great. No offense to the average young girl, but it seems many just aren't even willilng to learn the littlest bit about a car. Not even possibly how to do tire pressures in some cases. I mean come on.

As for the 3 Porsches, I'm happy to hear we have another caring porsche owner. I can't believe that you guys are so amdament about the circumstances in which the car was obatined. Bottom line: any way you cut it, this is obviously a consious Porsche owner that loves their car as much as any one of us. I personally I'm proud of buying my car as young as I am without any aid from my parents. However, I don't think anybody in their right mind would shy away from a Porsche as a gift. As such, our new porsche owner is the same as everybody else here. Welcome to the club.

Brendan, I was complaining to my long time (10yrs.) girlfriend about how I'm 38 and still haven't really settled down into a "career". well she immediately pointed out that I've had more careers and life experience than most people ever dream of and that is precisely what makes life interesting. (she was right , of course) I've been an arborist, lead guitarist, finish carpenter, car salesman, stockbroker, insurance sales guy, furniture restorer, retired for a year to race cars, mechanic, and now I've come full circle and decided to go back to school and study economics/finance, with an eye toward fund management(maybe, we'll see when the time comes) and all of these things have added to the richness with which I get to experience life every day. Perhaps I do all of what I do precisely because I am so deathly afraid of getting to the end of life and wonder what could have been, had I not lived with passion and endless curiosity. , But we all drive porsches because our passion and appreciation for the fine things(not necessarily the expensive things) is what our lives are about...Right?
