Odometer jumped 100K -Update
Some time between 69,900 miles and 70,100 miles the hundreds digit moved from 0 to 1, so I now show 170,100+ miles. I'm guessing the 0 turned to a 1 when 069,999 turned to 170,000. Does this sound like a broken gear? Could this be evidence of prior tampering? Could the 1 just be sticking to the 7?I've driven 400 miles this weekend and everything seems fine with the odometer besides the extra 1 digit.

I'd guess that the cause is probably not malice but rather just some grime/grit that got stuck between the 10's and 100's wheels. Rebuilding the odometer isn't too expensive

Hi Mello!
My son and I sat with you saturday night. Nice car! Nice meeting you and your girlfriend as well....if you need to send it out...as both winslow and I can attest....North Hollywood Speedometer does very good work!

PS - 195,000 and counting on my car!
PPS - Brooklyn Kitchen is on Lorimer St. near Skillman Ave (no idea where this is!...I need to go visit him)

ive seen a couple do that. Easily rewound back to the right number though. If it has ever blown a gear it could be a chunk of that plastic got caught in there and grabbed another digit. Take it out and hit it w/ some compressed air in a can or lightly w/ a compressor- If you pull up on the bar that keeps the digits in place you can roll the one back to zero

Nope, have to take the wheel off. Disconnect the battery and let the car sit for ~30 minutes. 2 Torx bolts on the back of the wheel take out the airbag, and the wheel comes off with a 24mm (IIRC) socket. The rest is done with a screwdriver. I suggest changing out the bulbs in the instrument cluster while you're in there.

Take the plastic trim off around the gauges, then it will actually slide out without taking the wheel off.

I agree with Rock. I have taken my gage cluster out several times without removing the wheel. Be very careful about the ribbon cable and also remember that those connectors are old, brittle pastic. But you do not have to remove the wheel!

OK. So I finally pulled out the odometer. Everything looks fine. Here's my question.... I was able to move the 100K from 1 back to 0 simply by looking straight at the odometer, holding all other numbers to the right, and spreading the 100K digit to the left. From here, I was able to put the 1 back to a 0. Does that sound right? Everything looks normal, but there seems to be more left-right play than I thought there would be.
Have I done it right? I'm afraid the 100K digit is gonna go from 0 to 1 again, when the 10K goes from 7 to 80,000, as it seemd to have done when going to 70,000.

Some more observations. There doesn't seem to be anything spacing the digits, as there is on the trip odometer. Also, I just blew out the odometer with compressed air, and a little flying critter, like a gnat (dead one) may have fallen out of the odometer. Maybe that messed up the odometer. The number still seem to easy to move around though.

Suggest you call North Hollywood and ask them...they are very nice and I believe will also sell you parts if you want to DIY. While you are 'in there' you should probably do the odo gear anyway.
