Post Difference between early and late axles?

The time has come for me to order new axles for my '86 951. The parts catalog lists 944 332 038 01 for the '86 951 among others, and 951 332 038 02 for '87 and later 951's. I was planning on ordering the earlier axles, but received some information from a knowledgeable source (Jason at Paragon) that the later axles will fit. Obviously the old style cv joints would still need to be available to provide rebuild compatibility with the early axles, but I am surprised that the complete early axle assembly is also still available and advertised. Typically when parts are interchangeable, the earlier part is dropped and the PET lists this change. Also, it seems likely that the earlier CV axles would be shorter considering the change in offsets between '86 and '87.

I'm just looking for another yay or nay on the late model axles before I place my order with Paragon. I'm sure Jason is right... I just have to prove it to myself.

When I called Jason, I almost ordered their Koni 28 series damper setup, but somehow managed to resist!

I have a decent set of 1986 951 half-shafts. I bought them for my S2, but found out they were not the right ones. One of them has a new CV. I got them off of the classifieds here and never opened the box after it arrived. I could check the #'s if you are interested.

Steve, rumor has it that I know what I'm talking about....occasionally just don't ask my wife to verify

On another note....we're you just joking about the 28 series order?...it went through on your credit card just fine.

Ok, Ok, just kidding, got to have some fun here!

If you bought the axles from a dealer, only the later style would be available...something I believe the 944 Parts & Technical Reference Catalog mentions. Evidently Lobro still offers the early style in the aftermarket.

Bump.

I'm still not sure of this. I know Jason says this is standard practice, but I can see how both axle assemblies could bolt up, but one may cause undue stress. I've never seen any TSB's on this.

Can anyone else shed some light on this?

Talking

Why would it cause undue stress?

One thing I would like to see is large-diameter hollow tubular axles to save some weight! I like the big aluminum ones on the Corvette, perhaps we can modify those things to fit... hmm..

I have some real world experience with these axles. I fitted them to my '86 951 with no problems. I even had gotten them from Jason. No problems, tested beyond 150mph if that is a good enough test I put a few thousand miles on them including a few DE events, before selling the car. I can report no problems, Jason is right
