Porsche 951 vs Camaro SS 1999?
Hi!
I have a question for you guys. Last week, I went playing on a race track near my city and to my surprise, I outaccelerated a manual 6-speeds Camaro SS LS1 1999 on a 20-140 mph straight line sprint. It was very hot outdoor (85-90F with about 80% of humidity), and my car was very slow compared to other colder days, but I still put beetween 1 and 2 carlenghts on him? The guy knew how to drive his beast...
I don't know the exact modifications that the previous owner made to my 951, but how much power/torque and what kind of modifications would it need to pull that way on a 300-310 RWHP car with really poor weather conditions for our 951?
Thanks alot
And sorry for my really bad english

The camaro's are porky...3500lbs.
Remove your banjo bolt on the IC pipe, is there a jet in it? If so, you probably have autothority stage II chips. What kinda boost levels you see on the gauge?

At about 3500 RPM, I needle is right at 2 BARS on the stock gauge, lowering to about 1.75-1.8 BARS at 6000 RPM. The FBody may be porky, but the SS LS1 still runs 12.95@108 mph according to Mustangs and Fast Fords. The guy didn't believe that a poor man's inline-4 Porsche outaccelerated him.

At the very least you're chipped and boosted.
I would install an aftermarket boost gauge to see just how much boost that is. The PO installed the jet in the banjo bolt on my car...I got a nasty surprise when I hooked up an aftermarket gauge..18psi in 3rd and 20psi+ in 4th...(gauge went to 20psi).
You've either got a shimmed wastegate or the jet in the banjo bolt that I mentioned.
With that setup my car ran 60-100 (start at 50, floor it in 3rd gear, start timer when passes 60mph...stop at 100mph...i shifted to 4th) in 6.2 seconds. 1/4 mile around a bend @ 107.5mph says gtech. That was with no launch at all..like 1200rpm...15 sec time..hehe..I figure 109 is reasonable if I launched 'er.

I also tested my 60-100 mph acceleration times. Launching in fourth gear at 50 mph, I obtained beetween 6.1 and 6.4 seconds.
I also tested my quarter mile specs with a G-Tech Pro. Here is my trap speed:

I think you would need a professional dragger and the perfect conditions to obtain a time like that. My Buddy has a 99' SVT cobra that makes about 360hp (crank) and we can't turn a quicker time than a 13.8. I think the low end torque is what is holding them back.
We, on the other hand, have to get the perfect "slipping" to have a nice launch. We need to build boost as soon as possible. And without that immediate torque, we can have the better launch (more frequently)

I totally agree with you, Luke. A standing start race is all about driver... But being given that the acceleration began on a rolling start at about 20 or 30 mph, the driving skills influenced the results alot less than on a standing start. I still can't believe the results of that straight line acceleration comparison. The Camaro SS LS1 is equal with a Corvette C5 on a quarter mile acceleration (meaning from 0 to about 108 mph). After, the Corvette C5 has a small advantage. I thought that our poor man's Porsche couldn't compete with these "big monsters" anymore? Heh...

Livin' in "D" town, home of the BIG tres. I really think most of the magizines , like the local Road and Track, are Biases. I wouldn't doubt it if GM slips them some money for a 12.9 1/4mile.
My neighbor just installed a Jon Barret 383 stroker in his 80' Z28. It was rated at 430hp or something. It's still a dog. It must weight two tons and he opted to retain the factory 3 speed 350 turbo tranny. He wont go for a ride in my 951. He claims it would be "un-ethnical" or something. I know he is jst sad.
I took his little brother out for a ride though. When we returned, he went straight to Keith and told him just how sad his car really is.

I'm driving my son's pristine '97 Z28 this week. 295 HP from the factory, he has the new SS ram air intake, K&N and a cat back system. The car is flat out fast. But, it is a lot heavier than our cars (of course heavier than my little NA) and it redlines at about 5200-5300 rpm. I would still say you're highly modified if you're taking that stock '99 by 2 plus car lengths
