Default Turbo header panel

Hey guys,

Well, there's a 1981 Porsche 924 Turbo in my local junkyard. I REALLY like the look of the header panel that has the 4 openings with the air ducts. I tried to remove it, only to realize that it's welded to the body (I think). I'm going to go back tomorow with proper tools and I was wondering if you guys could tell me, is there any way to UNBOLT this? I don't mind spending hours out there, but I would really rather NOT cut it, if I don't have to. Is ultimately welded directly to the body, meaning that there's no way to remove it other than using a sawsall or cutting wheel?

I'd like to install it in my 1984 Porsche 944.

Also, the Turbo hood is there too with the hood scoop. Is there any use to that? I mean, I know I don't have a turbo, but will that benefit my car whatsoever? I guess what I'm asking is, has anyone fabricated any sort of an air intake to go to it? I guess it seems pointless since the 944 already has what would technically be called a "cold air intake".

Thanks!!!

I believe you have to cut it off, use a drill to drill the spot welds not a sawzaw. I would grab that hood, many people like the looks of it and will pay a good bit for it. Good luck.

Disclaimer: this is all "IIRC"...

The header panel on both the 931 and the '84 944 are both welded on. It can still be installed on your car but it's not a simple bolt-in proposition. I think you can make mounting tabs, tho.

Regarding t he 931 hood, yes, they look great but there is no real benefit. Plus, they don't have provisions for the hood shocks (you'll need to develop some kind of hood prop for it) and the scoop will interfere with a stressbar if you have one or plan on going that route.

Again, all IIRC...

BB.

Thanks guys... damn, that sucks. Re-installing it is not an issue as I've been teaching myself to weld for the past 6 years (note that I didn't say I KNOW how to weld, hahah). But, the junkyard doesn't allow any power tools in the yard. Damn...

I'll have to think of something.

Thanks,

It's a lot of work, I have one that I'd love to put on the '83.

also an iirc situation and not to mention waaaaaaay off topic.
but i believe toyota celicas get their air directly from their hood scoop.

and i would love to have both the header panel and hood scoop on my car. then i could say i have a 931... with an n/a motor swap

Default Well...

I thought about it long and hard, and decided I'm not going to spend the money. The parts probably wouldn't cost that much... the header panel... maybe $20? The hood, probably $75-100. But I would still need to buy an electric rechargeable sawsall or angle grinder which I don't already have. Although it would be cool, I think I've come to appreciate the 1984 Porsche 944 for what it actually is. Although I like options, and I've been adding every option to it I can, I like the fact that it's all original looking. So, I'll probably keep it.

Maybe one of you guys can pull the parts. It's located in U-PULL-IT in Davie, Florida.

Take I-95 to 5-95 (In Fort Laduerdale)
Take 5-95 WEST to 441 South
Take 441 South 1 mile, and you'll see the U-PULL-IT junkyard on the right (West) side.

It's about 3 minutes driving from I-95.

hum that header panel if its straight unpainted can fetch anywhere between $125 and up.

just take a portable drill and drill out the spot welds or dremel it out....its worth the time IMHO

If it still has the vents just those alone should get you at least $20

The 931 hood with the scoop will just end up putting water under your hood. Now this is was ok with my n/a but water + 951 motor= bad outcome. Be wise, just a thought.

Those along with the delicate areas like injectors and spark plugs. Water when it sits will seep. It could also find its way into the tps and afm which wouldn't be fun. I pressure washed the under carriage of my 951 and some how water got somewhere that caused it to stall and not start a half hour later.
