Post Proper Combustion vis-a-vis spark plugs

Further to my other thread "leaking front main seal ...", I just want to verify that I'm not blowing oil out through my exhaust in addition to the major leak through the front main seal.

My plugs are recent and they seem absolutely perfect in that they are totally dry without any signs of oil and a light brown colour.

So is it possible for the engine to be burning oil at a major rate (litre per 200 miles) if the plugs showed zero signs of oil? No visible smoke coming from tailpipe.

Just want to confirm and isolate this leak down to the leak'n main seal.

All comments appreciated, Keith

It is my understanding that a 944 will use roughly a liter every 500 miles. I seem to remember the owners manual stating that.

So, on a older, higher milage car... it seems a bit high, but if you know you have a leak at the seal, it might be in line.

geez water, I feel better about having to add a quart every now and then, is 500miles/litre really average, or are you pulling my leg?

My manual (which I cant find at the moment, or I would quote verbatim) said that 500 miles per liter was normal.

And I have read many threads here that confirm this consumption. A healthy 944 engine seems to eat a bit of oil, nothing to worry about. Although a liter every 200 sounds steep.

Even my old '79 924 ate about a quart a month, or every 400-500 miles.

I believe the owners/workshop manuals state that:
1. oil consumption varies with conditions
2. anything up to 1 liter per 1000 kilometers is not cause for tearing into your engine.

Yours sounds really high to me.

My advice is worth what you pay for it, lol!

200m/liter is too high though!

My 951 eats oil, but it is totally dependant on my foot. If i drive like my granny, I get almost no oil consumption. When I drive like I normally do, I use about a quart every 750-1000 miles.

Tom, if you have great seals, and a really tight engine, maybe you dont use any at all! But from experience, do not trust your dipstick when it comes to your oil level.

I use about a quart every thousand miles...dino or synthetic made no difference.

She drank some oil at the last autox...car did 14 runs (7 me, 7 brother).

i haven't done an exact calculation of my oil consumption, but the san diego pizza run cost me about 2 quarts (1200 miles or so) and my low oil light just went back on again this morning. but then again i think i have a leaking balance shaft seal.

tom, do you really go 10,000 miles between oil changes?

how much oil normally blows through the turbo and in to the intake? my intercooler pipes seem to have a nice greasy coating on the inside. perhaps my intercooler could use some dish soap and a pressure washer?
