Default Rear 1/4 panel chewed off part of my tire

I was accelerating up a hill in my 951 and I heard a flapping noise. I look in my rear view mirror and I see ribbons from the sidewall of my 285/30/18 P-zero flying around

I got out of the car.. it wasn't rubbing and it was just as hard to push down the car on the driver side as the passenger side. The sidewall is damaged , pics to follow tommorow when its light out but I'm really worried that the damage might have compromised the tire.

Anyone know why this would happen on one side and not the other? I'd really like for this not to happen again (and I REALLY hope I don't have to replace the ~$365 tire) I'm thinking maybe somehow maybe the rear driver shock failed suddenly??

feel inside the outer edge of the fender wall. On some cars (S2 iirc) there is an oval bubble that would cause rubbing on one side and not the other...

These cars are not perfectly square, I've had rubbing on one side and not the other when I was stock bodied. Just roll the inners a touch and you'll be fine.

Search might help,,, i can't remember where but people always mention that one side is always a little bit further out just by some design quirk of the car.

Yup, my driver side fender rubbed when my passenger side did not.
They are a good 0.5" different.
I just rolled the fenders.

My rear seems about the same but my 225 left front rubs the fender lip on hard corners where as the right side never touches. There is obviously a difference on the front of my car.

mine also does that, except its the right side tire that sticks out more than the left. My right rear tire will rub the fender sometimes but the left won't.

My car had some body damage on the left rear side before I bought it, so I always thought it had something to do with that, but if this design quirk thing is true, I'll feel much more relieved.

if ribbons from the tire are flying off though, you may want to look a bit harder at whats going on.

My tire may rub the fender but I know it doesn't tear ribbons of rubber off the sidewalls....

Why is it that people in the US cheap out on tires? I've never been in a country where people drive on them until they blow, except the US.
If you saw chunks of rubber flying around GET A NEW TIRE or you'll regret tearing up a rim when the tire blows.

More like tearing up the quarter panel when it blows.

thanks for the advice guys. I took a few pics of the tire/ fender and I think I saw what caused this to happen

Anyone else think that is the reason this happened? I feel like a tard for not noticing this when installing the wheels

Also, what would even cause that part of the lip to be bent like that?

Here are shots of the tires.. what do you guys think? Garbage? I don't do track events or even drive aggressively on the streets,, but I dont like the looks of this.

and a random shot of the rear passenger side

why is it that people outside the US constantly make assumptions about the US? Did I say I was not going to replace it? I said I HOPE I don't have to replace it. Now taking a better look in the daylight I'm pretty sure I have to. I'd like to prevent this from happening again before I get a new tire. Anyway, I appreciate the concern.

The lip does that when it comes down on the tire and grabs rubber and your wheel come back off of it. That is where your tire hit.
Tire still looks good to me, didn't hurt it much

Yep, you can drive on that tire, as long as you don't go over 55 mph.

You need more clearance between the tire and the fender, that's for certain.

i've got less clearance than you do with the top of the tire/s, 17's/7-8 1/2 under the lip but i don't tear up tire under a load like you did.

your backend sagged something fierce under load.
