If you saw chunks of rubber flying around GET A NEW TIRE or you'll regret tearing up a rim when the tire blows.
I've had two catastrophic tire failures on my 17" Cup IIs and I have yet to damage a wheel.

How are your rear shocks? Original?

its not the shocks. i put teh boxster crabs on my first S2. got the rub, put four new konis in it, still rubbed.

got a grinding wheel that fits on a drill, ground some, it stillrubbed.

got a cheap grinder with a big whee, ground some more, it stopped rubbing for about a week.

After about a week it was stolen... the rest is history.

Look at the right, looks to me like the belts are almost uncovered there, I'd say replace it. Driving on that is a bad idea.
Regarding tires: I didn't assume, I've lived in the US 11 years and I've been there three times the past 4 years as well

Your word choice dictated otherwise. Sometimes it's good to reread things before we click the "submit" button.

thank god you were running inexpensive, narrow tires.
otherwise this could've been bad.

Dude, one word "Coilovers" , that's the solution for your problems.

Your problem would probably be solved if you went down from a 285 to maybe a 275. It would probably be a lot cheaper, and since you said you dont do much intense driving, you probably wouldn't notice a difference anyway.

rear coilovers could also work, but if you are like me, those are way out of your budget.

There is only one way to find out if the tire will hold up, go tho the fwy and do a roll from 80-160mph see what happens. In case that we don't hear from you anymore, please leave me a contact where to call so I can buy the remaining of the car from your parents.
