Transmission seal failure (on a 944 auto)
Hi,
I am looking at getting a second porsche (a 944) and i have seen one that needs work, but the transmission seal is leaking, I have done a search and could not find a definitive answer, how easy would it be for myself to swap, or what am i looking at for cost / difficulty levels

On that car, the typical failure is the seal between the transmission and the differential. Not a job for the amateur.
You might be best off considering a rebuilt or used transaxle, figure about 3 hours for an amateur to replace.

Which seal(s) is leaking? Output shaft seals, input shaft seal, end cap plug seal, diff. side plate, gear carrier to case seal, or end cap to gear carrier seal?
Typically the output shaft rubber/lip seals and the input shaft rubber/lip seal will be the ones that leak. Output seals are easy to do, the input shaft seal requires dropping the trans and likely separating the gear carrier from the trans case to replace.
The diff side plate and gear carrier to case are factory sealed with loctite/form-a-gasket type sealant and should never leak unless the trans has been opened up and improperly re-sealed.

Hi guys,
thanks for the replies, it is a car i am thinking of getting, dont know much about it (it is cheep) and only needed for a type of gumball/cannonball across to a famous german racetrack
I have found out about this type of car needing care around the sills (rocker panels) but this one had this fault mentioned (did not want it to be a $4000 job on a $2000 car.
