The black heat insulation seems to be peeling off of the firewall and leaving some kind of brown residue on the paint. I don't think that it's rust...does anybody else know what it is and is there any way to get rid of it short of sanding and repainting?

Thank you very much

it isn't rust. i have it and i'm in FL... i believe it's an adhesive for that firewall insulation. i doubt there's much you can do short of pulling the motor, very VERY carefully peeling the insulation away, cleaning/sanding slightly, and re-adhereing it

its the nastiest tackiest glue you will ever come across in your life. it takes foreevverr to peel off, i found that out putting new insulation in the engine bay.

Sounds like a job for that black gorilla duct tape. Just throw that up there and it'll look like you aren't missing any insulation!
