The fact is that the 944 life cycle is a joke and the whole thing was pasted together from the ZF/Sachs and Bosch catalogs in what seems like a total of 38 seconds. The turbo is even more silly. I am almost temped to buy a 911 just for the experience of how easy it must be to work on compared to this ridiculous machine.

Yes, always cover the clutch inspection hole with a rag when working in its general vicinity! Interestingly, the 924 did have a cover for the inspection hole, only it's round and won't work for the 944 application.

So ridiculous it helps the turbo stay cooler and last for hundreds of thousands of miles.

So ridiculous this set up lasted through a grueling 24 hours in Le Mans of 1982 finishing 6th against the likes of Rondeaus with huge Cosworth engines...

It may be ridiculous to you, but it works!

I hear you. I'm in the middle of replacing a headgasket on a pre-GM SAAB 900 right now. The front of the engine faces the firewall. Talk about ridiculous!

Every 944 come with a clutch inspection hole rubber plug ,the problem is that when peoples do their clutch's they don't bother to put the thing back in or simply discard them ,they only cost approx $7.00 & can be bougth at any Porsche parts supplier.

Gator_86_951, I Have been a tech for Porsche for decades and it never stops amazing me how contorted these cars can be. I was working for an indie shop where we built/restored 911s and did a bit of street car work between races. We absolutly hated to see a 944 pull up to the shop. Anyway, I am not trying to bash here, quite the opposite. A 944 is a "delicate" design to put it nicely and one has to be amazed at the level of development that went into these cars. I think Porsche stopped when they finally got it right (968). Thats why I have a 924S - minimum clutter, lightweight, all the good of the old and new. Really a nice little package compared to the excesses of the 951. A 944S2 is a remarkable car as well. These cars are difficult to to work on at best.

Ive decided my Passat has some even more screwed up things than the 951.

Example: The rear brake rotors do double duty as the rear hubs. The wheel bearings are inside the rotor hub and then the wheel bolts to the rotor (wheel bolts not studs and nuts). When a tire shop monkey strips out the bolt hole for the rear wheel, it means a new brake rotor which means new wheel bearings and races and seal. I found that out when I decided to replace the brake rotors, and took it apart to find I had to make a stat trip to NAPA for bearings, races, and seals.

Dont get me started on the upside down caseless oil filter.

The brake fluid tank will hold exactly one liter of brake fluid. Thats over the max line, but its that big.

I replaced the position sesnsor after another blog explained the solution to hard starts, misfires, smoking and strong fuel smell...runs perfectly now....except allen wrench fell into the hole and now waiting to get underneath and find the ispection cover to hopefully fish it out! Glad I am not alone!
