Default pics of my car and dent (need quote)

some pics I took today. I want to get the body work fixed up this summer.

I backed up into some guys fender last year in the snow and put a nice big ent in my rear quarter panel. I got a quote from one shop for 1500 dollars he said the rear bumper has to come off and the whole quarter panel has to be repainted.

also can't get a good pic but my hood is weird, one side is a bit below the fender and the other side is a bit above the fender. so is the hood bent? or can teh hood be adjusted. The car was repained by teh previous owner and they removed the hood etc.

Always consider the price of just painting a whole new (used) body panel. Repaint your bumper end (by the way, getting the bumper off is REALLY easy, but getting the ends off of the main part requires a bit more work dealing with the rubber bumperettes) and the new quarter panel and bolt them back on. An undamaged panel is probably cheaper and will look better than a repaired one. Isn't there a porsche dismantler in Canada?

Yeah here you go- $225 for the whole panel at DC auto. Shipping will be a pain; see if you can find a salvage yard near you or someone with an extra one. Painting it surely won't be as much as what he is quoting you on right now.

About the hood: 944's don't take front-end bumps too good and it quickly knocks the nose panel out of whack, making the front look crooked. Ours has that, and you see it on lots of 944's. Another good indicator is the side gap between the bumper and spoiler, there's often a difference between left and right.
You can try adjusting the hood: just loosen the mounting bolts (and I suggest disconnecting the gas-springs too since they'll push it out of alignment with the bolts loose) and jiggle with it until it looks good, then mount the shocks again too.

Those fuchs wheels look fantastic on your beautiful car.

Look around in your area and find a shop that does bodywork and knows how to work with metal panels. These are usually lesser known shops than the places that only do insurance work and change parts. These are shops where people take cars that would otherwise be totalled.

Several years ago I had my 83 brought back from the dead by one of these shops in the midwestern U.S. after a tree crunched it. The techs were all Iranian and were extremely skilled at working with sheet metal panels. They were fairly priced, too.

thnkis, cool I guess I'll keep on looking around. I don't want to replace the whole quarter panel...... it has to be cut off and rewelded that's way too much work.

a good body man should be able to work that dent out, then a little finishing putty and paint. they'll likely have to remove the bumper to try and get behind the lower part of the rear quarter. replacing the whole quarter is a bit overkill and way more expensive. the damage isn't that serious. has the car been resprayed? if so, if its bc cc, they will add base to the repaired areas, and have to blend the clear with perhaps the door and entire rear bumper. $1500 isn't that bad IMO, as there is a lot of finesse to this line of work.

get references? get other quotes and compare. best of luck.

a guy quoted me 2000 to fix my car, so i think 1500 is pretty overkill on that, i bet you could reach down inside and knock it out a little with a rubber hammer and take it back and get quoted 500 from a respectable place.

Ethan

btw here's mine...

I don't think you can bang that out. It looks like a lot of metal stretch. I would try for a quarter panel from Nineapart and have Frank put it on Greyhound to you. Shouldn't be too bad.

yeah I tried smacking it really hard from the inside with a big rubber mallet and it just made it worse and the paint started cracking and chipping lol.

I don't want to replace the qhole quarter panel, you have to cut it out and get it welded that would cost way to much money.

I'd rather have it bondoed than replace the whole thing.

I had a chance to buy a rear quarter locally but the guy selling it said it was a ton of work to get it off and he said it'd be much easier to fix the dent.

I think a good body & fender guy could fix that with very little bondo..
