Default Bargain Early AC Delete (How to Pics Added) .. Update

Thanks to Frank (Legoland951), I have completed AC/compressor delete. Here is what you do: Buy a five rib belt that is that is between 857-860mm (hand length of belt is actually 863.6mm long) and run it between the alternator and the accessory pulley on the crank. To install it, you put it on the crank pulley and semi thread it on the alternator, turn crank (24mm socket) until it pops on and you are done. No pricey or VW brackets, no adjustment rods and no compressor. Below is a picture of the belt I/we used (Gates Belt Part number K050330/855mm). The next one I buy will be 1-2mm longer as this one is a wee bit snug. To the uber weight conscious, you could cut the bottom half of the bracket off - certainly the compressor mounting tabs for sure. Anyway, I hope this helpful to some poor 944 owner like me.

im using a four-rib gatorback thats about that length, the only adjustment i had to make was with the tierod on the bottom of the alternator. works fine.

This solution eliminates the tie rod and uses the stock bracket.

I took some after I lowered the car. They are pretty worthless but here they are:

I promise to take some tomorrow morning. Michael

Cool! Even cheaper than the spec944 delete bracket.

So how do you take off the belt?

Thanks. Frank came up with the idea. Cash short and I couldn't locate the VW bracket.

Same way you put it on. You pry a portion of it off the alternator side and rotate the crank to "twist it off".

My no worky AC led me down this path. I couldn't find a cheap way to refurb my system. So, in a year or so, when it all leaks out again, you'll know what to do .

USE THE KO50335 (longer belt). The K050330 will strand you! The k050330 belt was too tight and destroyed my crank pulley (well, it left just the center 24mm Bolt/the crank is somewhere in Malibu on PCH). Custom application requires some testing .

I have had a couple PM's for more detail on installation.

Feel safe using this solution but be sure to inspect the four 10mm bolts holding the pulley.

I took terrible phone video so here is a brief slide show.

Tools: Jack, Stands, 24mm socket, breaker bar or 1/2 Ratchet
1) Jack up car
2) Place jack stands on front frame rails
3) Remove AC compressor and all lines and wires 4) lay belt on alternator pulley (pic 1)
5) Place belt on bottom of Crank/Acc pulley (pic 2)
6) Lodge belt on bottom of Crank/Acc pulley (Pic 3)
7) Position wrench on 24mm bolt (Pic 4)
8) Turn wrench clockwise (2 or 3 quarter turns).(Pic 5)

The belt will pop right on. Even this tight one popped right on with one hand turning and the other working my video camera. However, it is a PITA to get off so you will have to use your imagination.

Hope it helps.

Michael

Now that this is over a year old, how did it hold up? Anyone else try this?

My AC does not work and the control has been replaced by gauges so I'd like to just get rid of it.

I'm also interested if this worked but as a emergency *get me back home* belt.

Got a 3hr drive with the wife and daughter to get to Atlantic Beach in NC this weekend and my ac is starting to make some funky sounds. I'd like to take one of these belts as a back up incase the ac goes and takes the current belt with it.

Does anyone know what belt you should use on a late 944?
