Default Crank Pulley Removal?

This question may be a little premature since I haven't tore it apart completley yet but, I want to be prepared as I continue the WP replacement project.
I loosened the 24mm crank bolt but, have not taken it out yet and the PS pulley is just hanging there.

Clarks says to remove the AC and balance belt gear as one unit using a gear puller. Will a standard 2 arm puller, like the one in the link below, work for this? Will I have to remove the radiator fans to have enough clearance?

Does the cam belt gear(on the crank) need to be removed to get the rear belt cover off? (Not mentioned in Clarks)

Is the a woodruff key on the crank and where is it? Clarks does not mention it but I have seen a few threads here where people talk about one on the crank.

Thanks again guys, should have things finished up on Wednesday.

As I found out on my 86 951, the crank gears do indeed have to be removed to take off the rear belt cover. I think that's lame frankly. I'm either gonna hack the covers up or just ditch em like I did on the NA. On the NA with the spring tensioner the rear cover slides over without requiring the pulleys to come off.

I got mine off in the car but I don't have a radiator currently. Used a rubber mallet and they all just came right off.

And yes there is a woodruff key... it's on the end of the crank shaft under the pulleys. You'll see it!

So the key will be visible when the PS pulley is off and will need to be removed prior to the AC pulley? That's great, I look forward to it!

Is the timing belt gear/balance belt gear one piece?

The timing gear and balance shaft gear are two separate pieces. The order is the following starting from the oil pump moving towards the radiator.

O-ring
Washer
Timing Gear
Balance Shaft Gear / A/C - Alternator Pulley - one piece
Power steering pulley
Washer
Bolt

You can modify the rear belt cover to allow for water pump removal without having to remove the cover in the future. I think my claim that my modification saves a whole lot of time is specious at best. What I have learned about these cars is that spending time figuring out how not to dissemble something is time wasted. If in doubt, take it apart and put it back together.

Also, the camshaft gear as well as the balance shaft gear/ - A/C alternator pulley are slotted gears that slide onto the crankshaft and fit with the woodruff key. The power steering pulley is held against the balance shaft gear / A-C alternator pulley by the bolt and washer.

Got it, thanks!

Might be kind of tricky to get the arms of the puller behind that cam belt gear...it's pretty tight against the block. I'll figure it out.

Thanks again.

You can leave the cam belt gear right where it is. I would leave it alone phil. You can get the cover off once you have the alternator and power pulleys off. I "modified" my rear cover with a dremel.

Okay. I thougt it had to come off, I misunderstood the post schwank said "crank gears have to come off"

I have to hack up the rear cover to fit the updated WP anyways, I may cut a notch in the bottom to slip off the crank for easier removal next time. I found a picture of a modified rear cover, it seems pretty straight forward.

Hopefully the key comes out undamaged. I didn't order one because I didn't know it was there.

I bet the engineers that developed this car wake up laughing everyday.

Key won't need to come out. You'll see when you get there. Slow and steady wins the race. Don't get too frustrated!!

Make sure you pay attention to the orientation of the front thrust washer. If it goes in backwards, you won't make any oil pressure.

About working in there- I would recommend at least pulling the fans. It took a puller with fairly big arms to get the timing belt gear off, and I needed the room.

I also pulled the radiator since I drained the coolant. Good chance to change the rubber radiator mounts and get rid of stones stuck in the rad fins.

I picked up a gear puller kit today. I *think* the one will fit in there without pulling the fans/radiator.

I have seen reference to the oil pressure pertaining to the crank bolt. Can someone explain how this works? Forgive my ignorance, I have never worked on a car where the crank bolt does anything besides hold on a pulley or harmonic balancer.
