Both the bellhousing news and the front crossmember news are fantastic. I have the utmost respect for the "r&d" you guys do with these cars! For now I'm obsessed with going with a turbo conversion instead of a v8, but if I ever change my mind I know exactly where I will be visiting.

Excellent article and a great find.
I just placed a order with McMaster-Carr for the threaded rod.
I have a couple of track car projects.

Thank-you!

Oh great! Nice to know it helped someone. Maybe Tifo will add an edited version of this to his "How-To" guide so its readily available!

It sounds like a sound solution, but I would dismiss it based upon the fact that this guy put a Cheby in his Porch! Why don't you just buy a Corvette? Sure, it will be heavier, not as good looking, a dime a dozen, and smell like a boat, but......well, I can't think of anything else to say. Oh yes I can, why don't you just get a 928? Aren't you missing the point of the stock engine?

No, I have never driven a 944 V8, but when have you ever needed experience for your opinion to matter? Besides, ranting over your car makes me feel less inadequate about my own. And finally, it really burns me to see that you actually enjoy your conversion!

Dude.....what the hell? You think just because I switch engines that Im lesser than you? I kept another 44 out of the wrecking yard where many turn up simply because of busted engines.....man. How dare you judge me.

Who makes Porsches anyway?

Brakes by Brembo & ATE, Seats by Recarro, Instruments by VDO,
Electrics by Bosche, Carburetors by Weber & Solex, Turbochargers by
KKK, Shocks & Struts by Bilstein, Koni & Boge, Synchronisers by Borg-
Warner, Wheels by Fuches, Bodies by Barth & Karmann… Need I go on?
I wonder if Porsche manufacturers anything for their cars?

Are the Porsches you see at the races "pure" Porsches?
Are their engines, chassis, suspension, etc. what you can buy at the
Porsche store?

Tell me about the upgrades made to all racing Porsches, including
factory cars? Fiberglass or Carbon-fiber body parts, Suspension upgrades, Steering wheels, Seat belts, Roll cages, Wheels and tires, Lexan windows, etc.
etc.

What makes you think your "recipe" is "correct"?
Why can't my "recipe" be just as "correct"?

Does a Porsche have to remain just like it was manufactured?
Why didn't the manufacturer (designer & assembler, if you will) let
the car remain just like it was manufactured, I mean assembled,
instead of changing it every year? Yes, planned obsolescence was a
big reason, but didn't they improve it too?

Therefore, isn't my improvement approved by the manufacturer, I mean
designer & assembler? I haven't heard from Porsche on this matter!
Only people like you.

I think DVC has a LS1 engine in his 944. He is being sarcastic. In fact, I think he quoted one of the basher's post.

Any concerns on the tensile/shear strength of the threaded material? I applaud the ingenuity on your solution, and just want to make sure there's no concerns re load bearing stresses. Is there enough room in there to make the threaded piece a bit longer? 1" seems like it could be a bit short to me.

No flames from me on the conversion, even tho I tend towards admiring factory solutions. I'm also somewhat of an old school rodder and harley rider, so I have modified all manner of vehicles.

Oh no, since I originaly posted this, ive cut more at about 5-6 inches. Fully threaded into the inner and locked down with a nut as seen in the picture and used loctite as suggested earlier. Theres about 3" threaded into the outer and again locked with another nut. Bending moment is 5 diameters so thats 2-3/4" which is way more than what I have there. Tensile is 58,000 psi so i dont think Ill see any bending. But if it ever does, Ill edit this page. Im not sure where 1" comes from but they are 5-6" per side now.

This also works:

http://www.allzim.com/acatalog/Tie_R...1_912_914.html

Two of them are a little cheaper than the $40 threaded rod plus new later style ends.

I reread the original post and I have no idea where I came up with 1" either. Time to switch to decaf, I guess! lol

If they are atleast ~3" longer than early manual tie rod ends and have the correct conical ball joint sleeving, yeah, that woulda been nice too. But just looking at that picture (not that its representative), it doesnt look near long enough. I needed something to thread into the inner rod atleast 3 inches and then make up ~2" before threading into the outer. Not including extra length for adjustments.

So it would need to be whatever the stock early tie rod length was plus ~3". More the better really.

The joint itself is identical. I don't see what you are talking about when you say:

"I needed something to thread into the inner rod atleast 3 inches and then make up ~2" before threading into the outer."

It is essentially the exact same as an early tie rod end. You don't have to thread it into anything except the inner rod.
