Cool flywheel timing mark?

Just trying to reseal the front engine of my 951 and and wondering where the reference mark on the flywheel sould line up? I am not seeing any bellhousing mark. Also any advice on removing the front balance shaft pulleys etc. (a bit tight)

I will try and describe best as poss. But Clarks-garage.com has the best pictures.

There is a notch on the bottom of the belhousing __|~~|__ kinda like that. When you rotate the crankshaft you will see a line/mark show up eventualy. This mark will show up twice for every one rotation of the camshaft mark on the distributer gear, so make sure you get them both where they need to be. But this line should be in the center of the __|~~|__ notch in the bellhousing. Also, follow this warning!! I have seen cars where the clutch has been replaced and the flywheel dowel pin was removed and the flywheel was installed in a position where the mark lines up, but is not at TDC. The first time I saw it I was truely stumped. But the second time It did not fool me.

Check out clarks garage for the pics. The mark on the top of the bellhousing is pretty worthless as I have never even been able to see it due to rust/gunk buildup. So in my opinion, dont look too hard for it through the upper inspection hole.

Also, welcome to one of the best sources for 944 info and help. We are a warm community with a only few jerks thrown in! Enjoy!!

Default Thanks

thanks for the info. Clarks garage was a big help. I just bought this car and thought that it had very bad turbo lag. (bad turbo? cracked exhaust manifold? bad cycling valve? or 944 turbos are just slow until the trubo boosts.) So to make a long story alittle shorter. I ordered a SFR stage one header, 3" full exhaust with down pipe and quiet muffler, wastegate, chips, K&N filter, and new single bb turbo just to fix the slow boost. As it turns out, the timming belt was retarted one belt tooth. Oh well I was going to upgrade the car anyway. One side note. For anyone reading this, make sure your air box has the lower hose on the bottom installed. I noticed that my original turbo in the car was a bit chewed up due to stuff getting past the air filter.
