Default Just Got the Call ...

from the Auto Glass Shop. My rear hatch reseal is complete. Yes! No more squeaking (never had leaking, fortunately).

What did that run you? If I get the seal redone, does that mean it will stop squeaking? I might be in for something like that. It's the one thing that really makes my car sound old.

i got the hatch on my other hatchbacks and on one of my 944s to stop squeaking by moistening a rag or paper towel with wd-40 and wiping it on the rubber. worked great on my convertibles too.

I thought the problem was with the window and how it is seated on the frame (or not seated - i.e. "delamination" as everyone on this board calls it). Sounds like your squeaking came from the way the seal sat on the car body?

Anyhow, an update on this situation. I picked up the car yesterday and the squeaking seemed to be gone (although I have rabbit ears because I am a perfectionist with this car so who knows). The top of the window appears to be well sealed, but whatever glue was used did not create a continuous black strip at the top of the window as I hoped it would. In other words, I can still see some of the old "separation" although there is a continuous line of solid black all the way across the window now. I don't know if this is a concern or not. I picked up the car at closing time yesterday, so I didn't get time to quiz the mechanic as I usually do because everyone was gone but the receptionist gal. Rest assured I'll call them today.

Keep us updated, and find out what they used.

Sounds like they just covered up the glass/metal with something from the outside, rather than removing the glass and doing a re-seal?

I talked to the glass technician. He took apart the entire frame and re-glued/sealed it. Fingers crossed.

I just drove it straight home from the glass shop to my house. That was Wednesday. Since then it has sat in my garage. I might get out with it a little this weekend. I'll let you know.

UPDATE: The hatch re-seal solved the squeaking problem, but i was disappointed with the workmanship. They put some urethane or something in the top of the frame (which was OK), but I feel they reinstalled the hatch too soon as this urethane was still tacky and it stuck to the weatherstrip seal ON the car and when I opened the hatch, little pieces of the foam seal were ripped off. I called the shop (which came well recommended) and they asked me to bring it back. I ordered a new weatherstrip seal from Pelican and took the car back. I was somewhat hesitant, but they did a great job on the weatherstrip install, took away some of the urethane and painted in flat black. It looks great, doesn't leak, and doesn't squeak. About $350 later, I'm happy.

a new hatch seal fixed my squeek...I used a Genuine one, it was less than $100 from sunset imports

Mine was Genuine, also. It was a later version than the one I had on the car - which I will assume was original. Apparently it is a bit thicker and also has no "seam" (in other words it is one continuous loop). These measures were apparently taken to avoid the fumes in the car problem some have experienced from the rear exhaust. My hatch closes fine, but opens a little rough. I can't free the hatch with only the actuators - I have to actually use the key and apply a bit of pressure. My mechanic says to leave it this way for a month and see if it works itself in - rather than adjust the locking pins now. What are the opinions out there on that advice?

They probably used the same urethane they use for windshields, it should be fine. And you need to put the entire assembly on the car while everything is wet so the frame takes the proper shape. glad everything worked out well for you.
