Default How to remove rubber bump strip glue gunk?

Hey guys... decided last week that I didn't like the side bump strips, so I pulled them off. Just wanted a clean canvas for the race car graphics

The adhesive looks to actually be a rubber strip held on with some insanely strong glue. It does not peel off, and seems impervious to 3M adhesive remover, WD40, engine cleaner/degreaser, and everything else I have thrown at it.

Aside from sitting there for hours with a razor blade, how in the heck do I get this stuff off? I don't have a heat gun but do have a propane torch... though I am not too keen on torching my paint either!

I got it all off really easily with a metal putty knife and acetone. But I was about to get my car painted. If you want to protect the paint, acetone might be too harsh so try thinner. And a plastic putty knife.

I used a 3M eraser wheel. It worked pretty well and didn't harm the paint.

i just did this. No solvent I had would make a dent in some of that tape adhesive.

bought this on ebay for $43 shipped. Best thing ever for the job. worth it for the time you will save.

Huh, looks like a Harbor Freight air tool. I have a couple of those for cutting wheels etc. Looks like I just need the right wheel. Even better it's air powered, so my only energy expenditure is to lift the beer.

Thanks guys.

I used a combination of things...3M adhesive remover does work, it just takes WAY TOO LONG...I used the edge of a credit card to scrape down the high areas and then brake cleaner seemed to disolve what was left. Thumb nail was another good tool. No matter what you use, you'll need to keep spraying, soaking, etc as you scrape.

I wanted to preserve paint and was very cautious about what I tried, but I was able to get it all completely off and it looks great, with no damage to the paint whatsoever. Good Luck!

I did find that gasoline worked well for the heavy stuff as it appears to be petroleum based stickum. Made sure I did it in the driveway and not the garage.

I tried everything on that glue, even one of those eraser wheels off ebay, but didn't have any luck at all. Seems the only ways to get it off will involve damaging the paint. I gave up and stuck them back on with double sided tape.

I'm interested in this as well, I like the look of them on the car but my strips have badly damaged paint and I want to do them over in matte black ( going on my guards red car).

Have you tried a heat gun to soften the glue? It might work but be careful no to get it too hot that it damages the paint. Use a new, very sharp putty knife with the gun.
