Default Exhaust Manifold Removal

Did a search but didn't find too much. My buddies got an 84 944 that needs the gaskets and a few studs replaced on the exhaust manifold. I've read the clarks garage write up and I understand how to remove the studs with he two nut trick and I understand how to disconect it all, but im just wondering if anyone has a few tips on how to remove it easily and quickly? Can I remove it without removing anything else?

Thanks in advance.

Will

Having the cruise control servo box and the power steering fluid resevior out of the way would probably allow for better access from the top, but otherwise I can't think of anything else. Remove the heatsheild underneath the headers?

If you have a stud puller you can remove the studs going into the head, then the header will come out easier. Otherwise, i have always pulled the head and headers out as one piece.

Unbolt the headers, then first pull out piece going to number 2 and 3 through the top. After that the other piece can tilt up and out (ours have slotted holes for the rearmost hole of each piece, works great, dunno if this was standard though!).

I don't think early NAs had the slotted holes but I could be wrong. And I think the 1-4 header has to come off before the 2-3 header can. Correct me if I'm wrong... but I don't see how the 2-3 could possibly come out with the 1-4 in its way.

It might help if you loosen the 4 crossmember bolts then have an assistant push/pull the engine to make a little more clearance.
