Default Fuel economy meter/gauge on S2

Is there a possibility of getting a fuel economy meter on an S2 car? I know fuel economy meter was available on some 944 models but not the S2 and turbo (and possibly S)?

I dunno never seen it on a S2 but I can tell you my S2 smokes both my 924S (Stock) and 924S (944 motor + S2 gearbox) for fuel economy.

I doubt the S2 gets better mileage than a 2.5 Mine got around 27-28 mpg and that was highway mileage. The 83 easily got 30 or better.

I got alot better in my S2...

My 924S averages on all engine/trans combos around 22 city and 27 highway
My 944S2 averaged around 24city and 31 highway

I have a heavy foot..

P.S. on a side note I got identical Odo and MPH readings with both cars running side by side.

That's interesting, how did you get to these figures? They are way off the original Porsche specs, 21 city 26 highway.

I really love the fuel economy gauge on my NA ... it's amazing how effectively it keeps me from stomping the ol' gas pedal. I look at that gauge at least as much as the speedometer.

As for adding one were none currently exists ... I wonder if just replacing the existing cluster with one containing the desired gauge would do it? The wiring and sensor data might already be in place, assuming that model was equipped with one in the first place.

Not positive for the S2, but on my old 3 series that mpg gauge was just run off the vaccum, or lack there of, in the intake. Not anything real complicated and I doubt it it is much different in the 944. As for retro fitting one, you are better off just being more disciplined with the right foot.

FWIW my S2 gets pretty bad gas mileage on my commute to Chicago. One way is 40+mi and I get around 18mpg with the traffic.

The guage that runs that needle is fairly sophisticated. My 86 944 had a economy gauge and I broke the needle off the tach. I got a replacement for an S2 and it works fine, but there is a lot more stuff operating that econ guage. I think it runs off the DME.

The whole thing was just an attempt to circumvent the CAFE rules wasnt it? Porsche could claim a fuel economy figure based on shifting at the points the guage prompts you to nevermind how unrealistic they may be, that way porsche got higher economy numbers and thus less gas guzzler tax.

Does anyone know how accurate that thing is? I've always wondered.

How do you mean you got a relacement for an S2? I dont think any S2s came with economy gauge

Correct on the function. Did some searching and it looks like the MPG gauge gets its signal from the DME. The MPG gauge being linked to the duty cycle of the injectors, injector open longer, lower the MPG.

Right...I'm only semi literate at night. I broke my tach and put in one from an S2...with no economy gauge.
