944/968 rust.
I recently kicked off a thread asking about a 944S2/968 Coupe as a daily driver. One comment made was to look out for rusting sills when purchasing. I have read quite a few reviews/buyers' guides and none mentioned rust (apart from the battery trays in early cars).
I have done a bit more digging and have come up with other reports of rust in the sills and around the windscreen frame. The latter is something I've come across in 993s. Many of those reports said it was due to either a bad windscreen replacement (paint having been scratched), or the rubber seal wearing through the paint. One tip I came across to cure the rubber seal problem is to put some PTFE (aka Teflon tape) beneath the seal. I've done this on my 993 and have had no problems. Hope this helps someone.
Anyway, the real reason for this thread is to focus in on the issue of rust on the sills. Does this start inside the sill cavity and work its wayout? If so, what are the causes of moisture getting into the cavity? Is this a common problem? If it usually external surface rust, that is less worrying and more easily fixed. I have also seen a few comments about rust in the wheel arches. Again, is this common?
Many thanks for any feedback you can give.

I have a few spots I've had to pay attention to on my S2...around the windshield as well as the trailing edge of the rear wheel wells (looks like it's where road salt may have kicked up over the years).
Nothing major and it's been addressed but I was surprised to see it!

Rust ?
I've owned 4 variations of 944's and a(current) 968 and have never experienced rust of any kind on any of them(which I thought was unique). The last 944 I owned was a vintage 83' that looked and shined like it was new.

It was interesting when I bought my car...it almost looked like someone had done donuts in a gravel parkinglot...as I said..trailing edge of both rear wheel arches...both had surface rust.
I am also pretty certain my car's been repainted so who knows if it was the result of how it got preped.

I've got a bit of rust on the underside, mostly around the rear wheel wells ... but barely any at all, and nowhere else. I'm still quite amazed by the lack of rust on this thing. My assumption is that, being a Porsche, it got cared for better than a regular car, but still -- I'm really amazed.

My first 944 Turbo was driven daily year around by the PO who bought car new in Ohio. The car had 172k miles on it and was just barely starting to show some rust on the front bottom drivers side fender. That was the only rust on the car.

No rust here. The only rust I have ever really seen on a 944 is in the battery tray, usually because the PO never looked around their battery to see acid leaking out into the tray.

Is there even road salt used there Colin? I am trying to remember what my sister-in-law (in Greensville) said about the winter last time we visited....

Joe- No we don't really see enough wintery weather for them to put out salt luckily. I think they have a couple of times in the past when we did get a good dusting of snow but that was it, and I made sure the car was inside the garage.
