Default One Little Crack

So, I've seen this awesome thread about how to get a brand new looking dash for < $100 and some elbow grease, but I only have one little crack. I'd like to treat this one crack to keep it from growing, and then treat the whole dash to prevent new cracks.

I'm thinking of black nail polish to seal and protect the existing crack, and then leather conditioner for the whole dash. Has anyone had success in treating existing cracks? Does conditioning the dash help prevent cracks?

You dug deep to find that post. Nice job.
If your dash is not leather, I would not put leather conditioner on it.

Bump. Has anyone tried to treat a crack? Did it work, did it not? Owners, lend me your experience!

No idea but i'm in the same position. One thin small crack, which I'd really like to get rid of without having to get one of those fuzzy carpets for the whole dash.

I have seen people try the nailpolish thing, doesn't work!!!! I am in the same boat, use a good product on your dash like vinylx made by lexol and keep it covered any time you park and it should not grow. This is what I have been doing for years without any noticeable change.

Have used this product when I was in England and it worked well on small cracks, though have not seen anything similar in the USA.

The product description is wrong on the site, goes on about dent removal for some reason. This basically consists of a cleaner/gel/activator that fills in the crack after you sand the edges smooth. You then prime/paint and texture the paint to match with the graining putty. All items supplied in the kit.

Assuming it starts with a split, and the split grows as the vinyl shrinks (and gets stressed) logic says that you should try to "close" the crack in some way. Nail polish just doesn't have any strength. I would think about a tougher glue product -- preferably black.

+1

Kiwi Leather Shoe Dye, or just SEM vinyl paint. Especially if you want to change the color of the dash from say Brown to Black.
