CONFIRMED. I've run a GPS at 80 mph and the GPS read 72. At 100 it read 89. The 'faster' you go, the more inaccurate your VDO gauges become -- 25 reads as 25, 45 reads as 43, 60 reads as 58.

And I'm sure the gauges on the other 944s are similar -- S2s included.

Either way, I'm going to have high quality videos here soon, GPS confirmed.

Can anyone host videos for me on youtube? I have troubles uploading there, but I can email the videos to someone if they will just host them. I have 4 videos. One is a 0-120mph pull.

I've included a screen shot of the 120mph pull. This shot is from a little before 120mph. It's about 115mph at around 4900-5000rpm.
Cory, he didn't say that there was a 25mph discrepancy, read again at 25 it reads 25mph but as speed increases the speedo gets very optimistic. it has to do nothing with the car condition but more with wheel and tire size?

Then again, they said 1st gear is 35mph, 2nd is 60mph, 3rd is 89mph, 4th 120mph, 5th 159mph (all at 6500 rpm). I have done 39mph in 1st, 70mph in 2nd, 103mph in 3rd, and 143 in 4th...
Cory, I believe you, no need to prove anything, but the way those photoshoped pictures that you posted look incredibly real, good job

I got my 968 to 151mph and it was nothing. It was pulling hard until like 145 but still pulling at 151, I was running out of road so I had to let off. The speedo is accurate, I've checked it. Haven't done that in a while..

The NA I had read 135 on the speedo but that speedo was a little off, I never found out by how much.

All on deserted desert roads only. On my computer game.

968 pulling hard until 145? is that a 968 turbo? 968's have 238hp don't they?

My '87 8v n/a, NJ turnpike at 9am on a sunday, probably about 3 or 4 years ago now. Up to 120 didnt take as long as i would have thought, to 125 took some time, 125 too 140mph took a lifetime. I am guessing thats about 125mph actual. I probably covered two miles in the time it took to get that extra 15mph. That is with the long 5th also. Im pretty sure only '88+ models had the short 5th. As FlashGordon mentioned, it simply ran out of umph.

Its scary how much faster the 951 is in comparison. I mean its strange seeing the same familiar tach and speedometer actually going up at a pretty quick pace. My '87 felt great at speed, but the 951 just feels so completley planted. Gotta love these cars.

Wrong,
That was only for 88 & 89. Except for the 924S which had it in 87 and 88.

I also calculate 6000 RPM in 4th to be about 100 mph. Again with 225/50 R15 Tires. In a stripped 944 hitting 100 mph is easy. However once you get into 5th (even the short .829 5th) things take alot longer. On track my 944 in clean air hit about 5800 rpm in 5th before it really runs out of steam. In draft I got 200 more RPM, but that as it. That comes to about 128 to 132 mph. Remember that compared to a stock NA have more hp at that speed due to smaller tires and the shorter 5th moving the engine RPM to a higher power point. I am sure with enough straight length and the windows closed I might see 137 or 140 mph (if I don't redline first)

As for speedo error... Well I can't say that I know much since I just don't bother to look at the speedo when on track. I only care about RPM.
