Listening to it again makes me cringe. My first youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMYlYzY10Mg

Is the number 1 cylinder towards the back of the car or the front?
Sounds like a diesel when I put it in reverse.

Do me a favor, next time you have the car on stands, crawl underneath the converter and give it a few good hits with your palm. I have heard converters rattle in much the same way yours is rattling.

Will do! You know, this car was advertised as having a cracked flywheel....
So the converter is near the engine, not the tranny?
It does sound to me like the sound is near the rear of the engine.

Oilpressure seems to be high. When m car spun the rod bearing it was knocking at idle. When i revved the engine the sound went away. And stayed away eaven at idle and then suddenly started knocking again.
When you depress the clutch while in gear does the rattle go away? (when torque tube is not moving)

Doesnt sound like the catalytic converter or the motor. If it was the converter it would sound much more like rocks in a bucket. If it was the motor then the revving would make the sound get horrible. I think it is definitely in the driveline and I seem to remember that automatics have something called a flex plate which connects the torque converter to the crankshaft of the engine. Putting it in gear would make the cracked flex plate split more causing more noise. Since I dont have an automatic 944 I cant say for sure that is the noise, but I really dont think it is the engine.

I hope its not the motor, although I've been reading some stories about the rubber dampner off the flywheel and that looks pricey and like it could be alot of work.
I just inflated the rear tire and it went for 30 down to like 8 psi in about 50 minutes. I'm actually thinking of fix a flat or slime for now just so they will hold air a little long.
Going to get it up and look inside the bottom of the bell housing to see whats going on.

The fingers are still crossed!

Automatics have a rubber damper too? Could be that if it is true. You would have to do the equivalent of a clutch job to change out the damper/flex plate/whatever because all of that is by the engine.

I dont think slime will work in a tire that you cant put on the road and spin. That stuff will just lay in the bottom of the tire and cause a horrible balance problem when it hardens.

Fix a flat seems to be working "for now". Such a hack. Check out the 0-60 rips, seems like its around 8 seconds. I'm thinking the engine is healthy. Oil pressure is around 3 when its warmed up. Idle seems a little high sometimes.
Feeling better about the whole thing right now. Wife is like don't get pissed off. Why get pissed off? I've been flipping cars and making some money, even if I decide to pump some money into this and keep it I'm still ahead of the game. I just rather not get to where I'm always working on it and doing major work.

I think the zero to 60 run would have finished off the engine had it been a rod knock.

I bet there is someone here who has parted out an automatic 944 and has a used damper.

I knew I liked you Richard!! But the flex plate/damper is also a good candidate. My F150 has a 4 cat system on it and the right rear one rattles exactly the same frequency as this one does. I thought it was an engine knock or flex plate issue at first, but then I broke out the old trusty stethoscope and heard it only from the cat.

yes, the 0-60 may not have been one of the brightest moves, but I did feel it wasn't the motor. Like the idea of the cat. Would it be broken pieces inside the cat? Maybe its time to let the cat out...
