Default How to get a $900 944 running

Use it as a rolling parts bin for a $5000 944...

I got my 88 for $4200, and am now into it for almost $10K, transmission, clutch, tune up (high perf from Lindsey Racing), solid trans mount, wheel bearings, torque tube rebuild, timing belt, motor mounts, Turbo Wheels, New cassette cover, new sun roof drive gears, new hood release clamshell, and counting...

But it sure is fun to drive...

Bet it wouldn't wear as fast if it didn't go so fast....

Well I got it up onto my ramps and the noise is coming from the damper area. Nice inspection hole so LED flashlight, and little dental mirror and bingo... Chunk of rubber missing, rips and so on. I'm thinking and I think I was reading this somewhere that there is a mechanical link when the rubber fails so that the car is still mobile and that most liklely the noise I'm hearing. I also was reading that this mechanical piece can also fail and make it so that the car can't move. This person also did an upgrade and got rid of the damper and put in a standard clutch set up and left the auto tranny. I'll have to think about this whole thing as I'd almost rather just let it go. But I truely like having a "race car" around as my daughter put it. I'm torn like the rubber in my damper. What do you think it would sell for on Ebay? I've got good feedback as a seller and would list everything I know about it. Should bring more than the $1,250 that I've got into don't you think?

Huh? Try giving Ian a call, get his number from 944online.com (1.866.944.STUF) they have new flex plates from $1006, but might be able to make a deal on a good used one if they have one...

Yeah, I commute 150 miles round trip per day all but 15 miles or so is on the highway (I95) got it up over 120 once, and was still pulling.... But now need to replace the radiator... New one sitting in the back of my blazer waiting for the trans to come out for refresh....

Keep the old ones running, or make them run, or let them go to someone who will, not sure how you will fare on e-bay, better to try to sell through rennlist or any of the other pages specializing in P cars, but I can tell you the car appears to be worth putting the extra $1000 into if that is all that is needed to have a driver.... These cars are fun to drive, lots of fun....

"Just" $800 here http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Porsc...QQcmdZViewItem

Wonder if I can find someone that has a used flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate for cheap?

Lol, you might find another dead auto 944 for that...

Maybe you just want to find a manual drivetrain... it's gonna be a performance upgrade anyhow...

Thanks for the heads up, but I think if I'm going to do all of the work, I'm going to lean towards a clutch setup. Although it may look good, how old is it and how many miles has it got on it? What if its 10,000 miles away from failing? Just seems like alot of work for used parts.

Thats the gamble you can take. What if the transmission itself goes out in 5,000 miles after you spend $600 on a clutch assembly or $1000 on a rubber plate. Then you are in the car really deep and it is broken again... Every expensive repair is a gamble on these old cars.

I agree that putting a used part that deep in the car is a little nerve wracking.

That is why I am doing my clutch, rebuilding my torque tube, and having my transmission rebuilt all at the same time, along with a refresh on the shifter linkage, and a new trans mount... Taking care of the entire drive train all at one time. During the down time for the trans I am doing all the other work myself, will have a good look at the CV joints...

I've decided to convert from the damper to a clutch. I'm getting a new Sachs clutch and pressure plate from one forum member. And it looks like I'm getting a flywheel from another member. I'm going to set it up so that if I want, or the next owner wants, they can stick a 5 speed in. Gathering parts for now.

On craigslist http://burlington.craigslist.org/car/606620838.html
Found some other things that tickle my fancy. With fuel prices going through the roof I'm going to attempt making biodiesel. I've played with WVO already, and the combo of biodiesel and WVO would be good. I've got a 60 gallon tank I'm getting for my bus so at any rate although this car has a lot of potential its more of a distraction at this point right now. I got it running, now someone else can finish it up and have a nice car. I'm parting out a 1985 300TD and I just put a deposit on a 1984 300TD "parts car". You guys have been a lot of help, thanks!
