Default How much tension on the power and alternator belts?

Hi there,

I've just finished re-installing the belts for the power steering and alternator (generator) and am having a bit of trouble with the tension.

The workshop manuals specify a tension of 9.5 on the alternator belt and a maximum deflection of 5mm on the power steering one.

However, when I start the engine I hear a loud whirring noise and there are vibrations up the steering wheel. When I turn the wheel they seem to go away so I'm guessing I've got the tension on the power steering wrong.

As I've got the porsche tensioner tool, can somebody let me know what the tension is meant to be on both of these belts.

As the belts are old ones, I'm guessing that the tension is different than if they were new (?)

Many thanks,
Alex

I don't know about original tool but krikit values you can look from here http://www.blaszakprecision.com/Belts.html
It seems that AC belts are tensioned twice as much as timing belt.

Thanks chaps. The clarks-garage post seems to suggest it is due to dirty fluid.... I've done a bit more diagnostic now so maybe someone recognises the symptoms... Here goes:

- Everything was absolutely fine a short while ago
- Then I did the belts, reconnected it all up and the problem started
- Irrespective of the tension on the power steering belt a whizzing noise is heard
- From up close the noise sounds more like a very fast rattling
- When I move the wheel all the way to one side and then a little bit more past the end point the rattling/whizzing becomes much louder
- Removing the belt completely gets rid of the noise just fine

Does this help at all? Clarks-garage suggests replacing the reservoir (due to dirty filter) but I very much doubt the noise would have started so suddenly.

Help!

I'm guessing that's a 9, not a 0.9?

Any ideas on the rattling?
