my door lock switch on my 87 944.....
is pushed thru the center console. i can see it but of course can't pull it back thru the small hole.....i guess a tab must have broken off.
would it be easiest to remove console or is there a better recommended way? is the console held on by screws only?
thx....it's an auto trans, btw.

What year is your car? Mine's an 87.
It's not hard to remove it, but it's a several step process.
As I recall, there are a couple of screws in the armrest, some more in the ashtray compartment (the ashtray pops out), and also on each side of the footwell. The base of the shifter (the one with the P R D 1 2 etc on it) likewise pops out. Don't remove it from the shifter, just turn it sideways.
Once you've taken out the screws, the panel with the switches should be loosey-goosey; you should be able to access the switches.
What I can't remember is whether or not you have to take out the stereo in order to access the switches. I think you might.
It's pretty straightforward, actually. The important thing to remember is not to force anything -- remember it's all plastic, and stuff will snap.

So you have exactly the same car as I do.
I took some photos of my work on the centre console ... I might still have them. I'll check my photos when I get home from work tonight and post them if I have them.

Heres what I did ( do do have to unscrew anything. Start the car put it in drive 2 (foot on brake) simply pull out the storage bin, then put the car in park and shut it off. Reach your hand underneath where the switch is and push up on it. Good Luck !!!!

Unfortunately the only photos I have are before and after ... I'll post 'em here for the heck of it. You can see the switches ahead of the shifter in the second picture.

Nah, not really. The spaghetti on the right is for the stereo, the mess in the centre is for the switches, and the tangle on the left is for the shifter. Easy peasy!
