Default my s2 doesn't like starting right away

my s2 is having problems starting, especially since the weather has gotten cold.
some times it starts right away, other times it wil crank quite a few before stumbling to a rough idle. it eventually smoothes out and runs fine after about a 1 minute of rough surging idle.

i have noticed that the time sit doesn't like starting right away, that it puffs out a very strong gas smell. almost like gas is constantly leaking into the CC and is flooded on start.

what could cause this?

Sounds like low fuel pressure. I had a similar problem that was a fuel leak from the filter. Have a look under the car when it's running to check for leaks.

Hey Jordon,

I found out my hard cold start problem is being caused by a bad fuel pressure damper.
It's leaking into the vacuum system.
I also have a slight fuel smell sometimes, and I'm hoping that's the cause.

I already have a fuel pressure regulator and fuel pressure damper on order.

Run the car for a bit, turn it off, and pull the vacuum lines off your fuel pressure damper and regulator and check for fuel.

+1, replaced dampener(sic) and fpr (used for 10 bucks off a 'lister) and booted right up. Check your vacuum lines from these two for gas smell.

how much are the damper and regulator worth? thats probably the problem.
this winter really took a toll on the poor car, time to start getting ready fro spring.

by the way wallace, remember my buddy with the "S"? well it was written off on the weekend some *** ran through an intersection.

Here they are on Pelican, bottom of the page:
http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/...FULinj_pg3.htm
They are pretty expensive for being so small, I got mine used and they work perfectly.
I would make sure that these are actually faulty before I go replacing random parts, like I said in a previous post, check the vacuum lines for fuel smell.

Man, that sucks. Is he alright?
He put a lot of work into that car.

I paid $147.00 for damper and regulator from 9motorsport.com including shipping and tax (get them to ship it USPS, it saves on duty/brokerage).

Locally, Weissach quoted me $150+tax for just the regulator.

Make sure you get the ones for the S2, as they are different (and more expensive) from the N/A and Turbo.

First check the vacuum lines to make sure that IS the problem before you order anything.

The regulator is the one closer to the firewall, and the damper is closer to the front of the car.

Those ones on Pelican are not the right ones.
The S2 ones are the same as the 968 and 1989 n/a.

Maybe I'm blind, but I don't see the damper on Paragon's site.

944online.com lists the damper and regulator as $94.95 and $89.95 respectively.

Damper is towards the front of the rail, Regulator is towards the back, in front of the firewall.

Not to hijack, but Jon, I asked you in the thread about the squeaky clutch pedal how exactly did you bleed the clutch? Did you drop the starter to access the slave cylinder? Thanks.

If it is only after it gets below 30 or 35 it could be the coil. Mine had an output of about 3k volts and would crank forever before it would start. Replace it and bam started right up.

I just used that site for the pictures, didn't really pay attention to which they really were.

944S2 Fuel pressure regulator: 944.110.198.06
944S2 Fuel pressure damper: 944.110.201.04

You should also check the rotor.
